Algeria intends to become a major supplier of green hydrogen and in the future supply a tenth of Europe’s needs of the green gas produced from renewable power. The North African country this year also held two large solar power tenders, the ministry added. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni Monday also visited Algeria, and closed deals for an Algerian-Italian ‘energy bridge’ with the aim of making Italy independent of Russian gas deliveries until the winter of 2024/25. “Algeria already today is our most important gas supplier and strategic for energy supply,” Meloni is quoted as saying on RDN after meeting Algeria’s President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. Germany had already discussed the idea of dedicated green hydrogen pipelines in the wake of energy partnerships with other countries, such as Norway.

Thirty-eight people were sentenced to death in Algeria on Monday for their role in the 2021 killing of Djamel Bensmail. He had been falsely accused of starting deadly forest fires in the north-eastern Kabylie region when in fact he had volunteered to fight them. After the images went viral, often shared with the hashtag #JusticePourDjamelBenIsmail, the people who took the selfies tried to cover their tracks. "The victim's father said from the outset that he had confidence in Algerian justice, in the justice of our country. The death sentences for the 38 will be commuted to life in prison as Algeria has a moratorium on capital punishment.

In this dazzlingly creative and thought-provoking digital book, Bashir argues that Islam needs to be understood not as a monolithic, unchanging faith but as an accumulation of beliefs and practices that people have labeled “Islam” over time and across regions. In Bashir’s view, both Muslims and non-Muslims have contributed to this process. Bashir abandons the constraints of the conventionally linear printed book for an online, open-access format. Linking texts from a dizzying array of sources, including poetry, novels, art, architecture, trinkets, graffiti, and films, the book invites immersion.
