Indeed, while we must acknowledge that Bangladesh will not transition to renewables overnight, we also should not fall prey to complacency and just accept fossil fuels as our primary source of energy in the medium and long term as well. Moreover, this overreliance on fossil fuels and the deals required to sustain our energy demands through these sources risks locking Bangladesh into dependency, vulnerability, and governance deficits. Our energy demands will only continue to rise, and industrial growth and urbanization are inevitable. What is needed therefore is a participatory, transparent roadmap that sets uniform renewable energy targets across all policies, with civil society, independent experts, and affected communities all needing to be part of this process. We cannot afford another cycle of short-term fixes and fossil fuel bias.

KYIV, Ukraine, Jan 30, 2026 (BSS/AFP) - Russia launched over 100 drones and one missile at Ukraine overnight, the Ukrainian air force said Friday, a day after US President Donald Trump announced Moscow had agreed to a week-long pause in attacks on the capital and other cities. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky suggested the pause applied only to Russian strikes on Ukraine's energy sector, and said he was counting on Washington to ensure Russia complied with it. "On the night of January 30 (from 6:00 pm on January 29), the enemy launched an Iskander-M ballistic missile from Voronezh region, as well as 111 strike drones," Ukraine's air force said. Russian strikes on Ukrainian power infrastructure in recent days have cut power and heating to millions during freezing temperatures. The governor of Ukraine's southern Zaporizhzhia region said late Thursday that Russia had hit a residential building, wounding one person.

PARIS, France, Jan 30, 2026 (BSS/AFP) - The French economy grew 0.9 percent in 2025, statistics office INSEE said in a preliminary estimate Friday, a slowdown from the 1.1 percent growth seen the previous year. Most economists had tabled on fourth-quarter growth of 0.2 to 0.4 percent as consumer spending remained subdued while the government wrestled with passing a budget widely expected to slash spending. But President Emmanuel Macron's centrist government is struggling to get a 2026 budget passed in a hung parliament, raising doubts about its ability to cut the deficit to five percent of GDP. The credit ratings agency Moody's said this week it expected the deficit to fall to just 5.2 percent this year. Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu is widely expected on Friday to force through the spending section of the 2026 state budget without a parliamentary vote.
