Rasheda K Choudhury, executive director of the Campaign for Popular Education (CAMPE), has advised the government to run a “reality check” before withdrawing the school admission lottery. But before doing so, we urge them to look closely at the ground-level reality,” Rasheda said. It exists for the prestigious schools, not in the villages. The education ministry, however, proceeded to abolish the lottery system later that afternoon. Rasheda argued that the lottery system acted as a gateway for the less fortunate.

Indeed, peace is a word and idea entirely absent from the resolution. A resolution by a central union in an institution such as Cornell is expected to do better. Most importantly, graduate students should amplify the desperately needed voice of reason and peace, rather than cheer on further destruction. Rhona Burns is a Postdoctoral Associate at the Jewish Studies Program and teaches on Israel and Jewish nationalism. The Sun is interested in publishing a broad and diverse set of content from the Cornell and greater Ithaca community.

The Supreme Court has said the idea of a caretaker government emerged from broad public demand for a neutral electoral process. In its observations, the court said the non-party caretaker government system had not damaged the Constitution’s basic structure. The verdict was delivered on Nov 20, 2025, by a full seven-member bench of the Appellate Division led by then chief justice Syed Refaat Ahmed. Bangladesh introduced the non-partisan caretaker government system in 1996 through the 13th Amendment during the BNP government. In 2011, during the Awami League government, the Appellate Division struck down that amendment, leading to the abolition of the caretaker system.

WASHINGTON, United States, March 16, 2026 (BSS/AFP) - President Donald Trump said Sunday that NATO faces a "very bad" future if US allies fail to help open the Strait of Hormuz, the critical oil transport conduit effectively shut by Iran in the Mideast war. Trump also said an upcoming summit in Beijing with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping could be delayed as he presses for China's help to open the strait. "We'd like to know before" the summit, Trump said, noting that China as well as many European countries rely more than the United States on oil flowing from the Gulf. "It's only appropriate that people who are the beneficiaries of the Strait will help to make sure that nothing bad happens there," Trump said. Trump said separately to reporters traveling with him on Air Force One that the United States was in discussions with "about seven" countries on getting help to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

PERTH, Australia, March 16, 2026 (BSS/AFP) - Australia's Ellie Carpenter has urged football chiefs to rethink the scheduling of Women's Asian Cup tournaments after she and Sam Kerr missed Chelsea's 2-0 League Cup final win over Manchester United. It meant they were absent as their club lifted the League Cup trophy in England on Sunday courtesy of goals from Lauren James and Aggie Beever-Jones. The next Asian Cup is in fact scheduled for 2029 in Uzbekistan. Thirteen of Australia's 26-strong squad play for English clubs and others elsewhere in Europe, with their seasons overlapping with the Asian Cup. The men's Asian Cup is typically held in January-February and so also cuts through the European club season.
