The ministry said the circular used a fabricated memo number dated Sept 7, which has “no basis” in official records. In reality, he currently holds the post of joint secretary (Planning and Development Sub-division-1), the ministry said. The ministry confirmed it has no involvement with the notice and has not issued any such appointment order.

BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman will return home “in a few weeks” to “lead the final phase” of the restoration of Bangladesh’s democracy, says BNP National Standing Committee member AZM Zahid Hossain. He made the remarks while visiting the tomb of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman in Dhaka’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar on Thursday morning. In response to a question from the media, he said: “The acting chairman of the nationalist party will not only lead the BNP. In Sha Allah, in a few weeks, Tarique Rahman will come and not only lead the BNP’s election campaign, but also the final phase of restoring democracy.”Tarique has lived in exile in London with his family since 2008, when he became a target of the then caretaker government. Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus has met with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. Yunus expressed deep grief and condolences over the loss of more than 1,000 lives in the recent floods in Pakistan. The chief adviser also told Shehbaz that general elections in Bangladesh would be held in February. He noted that talks between the National Consensus Commission and political parties were in their final stages, with the parties preparing to sign the “July Charter,” which will set out constitutional and political reforms. The Pakistani prime minister also invited Yunus to visit Pakistan before the end of the interim government’s term.

Court orders Interpol red notices to be issued against S Alam, two brothersA Dhaka court has ordered the issuance of Interpol red notices against Mohammad Saiful Alam, chairman of the controversial industrial conglomerate S Alam Group, and his two brothers. S Alam's two brothers are Abdus Samad, vice chairman of S Alam Group, and Mohammad Abdullah Hasan, a director of the conglomerate. Tahsin Munabil Haque, the ACC deputy director and investigating officer of the case, applied for the red notices against the three individuals on Sept 16, according to the anti-graft watchdog’s spokesman Aktarul Islam. This case, one of several dozen filed against S Alam, was lodged on Jul 2. This money was then cycled through multiple bank accounts and finally transferred to the account of S Alam Super Edible Oil Limited.

Police have reported the arrest of 244 Awami League activists from different areas of Dhaka during flash processions. In a statement issued on Wednesday, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) said 14 crude bombs and seven banners were recovered from those detained. Earlier in the day, activists of the Awami League staged sudden processions in Gulistan, Farmgate, Karwan Bazar, Agargaon and Panthapath. According to the DMP release, they were arrested based on information that they were attempting to disrupt law and order and spread panic among the public through flash processions. That is why so many people were arrested today.”Police had prior knowledge that Awami League activists were preparing for processions.

Bangladesh has recorded five more deaths from dengue fever over the past 24 hours, while another 668 people have been hospitalised. The latest fatalities bring the tally of deaths to 187 this year, while the total number of hospitalisations stands at 43,841. With Wednesday’s admissions, hospitalisations in September climbed to 13,365 -- the highest monthly figure in 2025. September has also recorded the highest number of dengue deaths this year, with 65 fatalities. At present, 2,016 dengue patients are receiving treatment in hospitals across the country.
