A BCS examinee caught with electronic devices at the 47th preliminary examination centre has been sent to jail. Solaiman Islam was detained on Friday morning while entering Eden Mohila College centre with two electronic chips and three earphones. According to the case statement, Porikshit was on duty as an invigilator at the 47th BCS preliminary exam in Eden College. The case added that the devices were capable of transmitting exam questions outside the centre to one or more people prepared to provide answers. The complaint said the fraud involved an organised group who collaborated to use digital devices for cheating.

Tensions have escalated at Rajshahi University following protests by students against the reintroduction of the “dependent quota” in admissions, a policy that grants preferential admission to children of faculty and staff members. By 2:30pm on Saturday, when Prof Mohammad Main Uddin, the university’s pro-vice-chancellor, arrived at the administrative building, students blocked his vehicle, shouting slogans against the policy. This led to further confrontation when a group of faculty members, including the pro-VC, attempted to enter the Zubery Bhawan. Slogans such as “One, two, three, four, all of them are frauds,” “Against the dependent quota, let’s ignite the fire”, and “Dependent quota no more” rang out in the air. The US State Department said on Saturday that the interim government has prepared the budget using the previous government’s framework and has taken some steps to introduce reforms aimed at greater financial transparency. It added, “The prior government made its executive budget proposal and enacted the budget publicly available, including online. It did not make its end-of-year report publicly available within a reasonable period. “Due to the change in government, the government’s supreme audit institution did not review the government’s accounts, but it released some summarised findings made publicly available within a reasonable period,” the report read.

Police have addressed criticism over naming former MP Mujibur Rahman Chowdhury, also known as Nixon Chowdhury, as the main suspect in the attack and vandalism at Bhanga Police Station during a protest against the delimitation of the Faridpur-4 constituency. A media statement signed by Additional Police Superintendent (Crime and Ops) Shamsul Azam on Friday night provided information about the Awami League leader. It also said Nixon exploited these protests, making provocative statements and taking actions on social media that have disrupted law and order in the Upazila. According to the statement, Nixon’s supporters entered government offices in Bhanga, vandalising property and setting vehicles on fire on Sept 15. A fire has broken out at the main power grid station in Satkhira Sadar Upazila, plunging the entire district into a three-hour blackout. The incident occurred around 11:00am on Saturday when a transformer at the 132/33 kV power grid station in Binapota area exploded, according to Russell Islam, the official in charge of the Satkhira grid line. The Fire Service said the flames suddenly erupted around 11:10am following the explosion of a transformer. Nurul Islam, a warehouse inspector with the Satkhira Fire Service, said preliminary assessments suggested the fire may have been triggered by overheating of the transformer or an electrical short circuit. Russell said that electricity supply across the entire district was cut off for three hours due to the explosion, disrupting daily life in both urban and rural areas.

A driver and his assistant have been killed after a collision between two trucks in Bogura’s Shibganj Upazila. The driver of the stone-laden truck, Minhaj, and his assistant, Imran, both identified with single names, were from Tangail’s Bhuapur Upazila. According to the Highway Police, a Rangpur-bound truck loaded with potatoes was standing idle at Pakurtala when the stone-laden truck hit it from behind. Minhaj died on the spot. His assistant Imran, who was critically injured, was taken to Bogura Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital, where he later died while receiving treatment.

The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has started a case against Salman F Rahman, vice-chairman of Beximco Group and former advisor to Sheikh Hasina, his son Shayan Rahman, and 25 others over alleged embezzlement of Tk 5.68 billion. The accused are members of the International Gateway (IGW) Operators Forum. Gulshan Police chief Hafizur Rahman confirmed that 27 IGW operators, including Salman and his son, have been named in the case. Under the interim government, allegations emerged against the IGW Operators Forum for leaving without paying dues and installing minimal equipment while extracting hundreds of crores. A housewife has been shot dead in Narsingdi Sadar Upazila after being caught in indiscriminate firing during a clash between rival BNP factions, police say.
