Cancellations and closures pile up as large snowstorm hits N.S.
Most schools and universities were closed and dozens of flights in and out of Halifax’s airport were cancelled Monday as a large winter storm swept across Nova Scotia. Public schools across mainland Nova Scotia were closed, as were many post-secondary campuses, including at the province's largest university, Dalhousie. All Nova Scotia Community College campuses were closed, with the Sydney site scheduled to shut at 4 p.m. local time. Public Works Minister Fred Tilley said in an interview Monday morning with the CBC’s Information Morning Nova Scotia that the province had about 400 pieces of snow-clearing equipment mobilized. He noted it comes on the heels of a winter storm last week that knocked out power to tens of thousands of Nova Scotia homes and businesses.

Israel recovers remains of final hostage in Gaza, opening way for next phase
The Palestinian committee of technocrats backed by the U.S. to administer Gaza has said the border crossing would open this week. Gvili's remains had been held in Gaza since he was killed during the Hamas-led attack on Oct. 7, 2023, on southern Israeli communities, which triggered the two-year Israeli offensive. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, speaking to reporters at the Knesset, described the discovery of Gvili's remains as an "unbelievable achievement for the State of Israel." Israel's offensive has since killed more than 71,400 Palestinians, with more than 480 Palestinians killed by Israeli fire since Oct. 10, 2025, according to Palestinian figures. In a statement, Hamas spokesperson Hazem Qassem said the discovery of Gvili's remains confirms Hamas's commitment to the plan.

Canadians are sharing photos of wintery weather after record-breaking snowfall blanketed the Greater Toronto Area on Sunday. City councillor Josh Matlow captured a photo of a winter storm in Toronto on Sunday, Jan. 25, 2026. Making matters worse was a winter storm across the central and eastern United States. It said that snow clearing operations continue after “severe winter weather impacted flights to and from” the airport. Toronto Metropolitan University, York University and University of Toronto’s campuses are closed.

Family of Gatineau couple found dead abroad disputes cause of death findings
The family of a Gatineau, Que., couple found dead while staying in the Dominican Republic is disputing the official cause of death given by local authorities. The initial results the family received from Dominican authorities said the cause of death was due to respiratory failure, pulmonary edema, high blood pressure and diabetes mellitus. The fact that the Dominican authorities concluded [the deaths] were natural and non-violent is extremely surprising from the outset. But Courtemanche told Radio-Canada he plans to have detectors installed to prevent the situation from happening again. An autopsy and a final report is still expected in a few months, Sauvé Jr. said .

Plane involved in fatal crash in Maine had history of problems
'Aircraft upside down': audio recordingAn audio recording of air traffic controllers includes someone saying "Aircraft upside down. We have a passenger aircraft upside down," about 45 seconds after a plane was cleared for takeoff. First responders arrived less than a minute later, Bangor airport director Jose Saavedra said. This particular plane model "has a history of problems with icing on takeoff" that has caused previous crashes, aviation safety consultant Jeff Guzzetti said. Even a little bit of ice on the wings can cause serious problems, so this plane would have needed to be deiced before takeoff, the former federal crash investigator said.

The Court of Appeal for Ontario is marking the 50th anniversary of the appointment of Bertha Wilson to the Court, effective January 2, 1976. The Honorable Bertha Wilson was the first woman ever appointed as a Canadian appellate judge and the first woman appointed to sit as a judge on the Supreme Court of Canada. In the meantime, we are calling for law students to participate by submitting papers that highlight Bertha Wilson’s legacy in the law. In addition to papers written specifically on Bertha Wilson, papers written as part of coursework in fields connected to her contributions (e.g., constitutional law, human rights, feminist legal theory, jurisprudence, law & social change) are also welcome.
