U.S. President Donald Trump’s threat to impose crippling tariffs should Ottawa and Beijing sign a trade deal is unacceptably coercive and mimics China’s behaviour. The speech was a political victory for Carney, garnering him a wave of positive media coverage both within and outside Canada. Trump then escalated the situation on Saturday with a social media post threatening to impose 100 per cent tariffs on Canadian imports should a Chinese-Canadian trade deal be signed. Relatedly, it sometimes feels as if Carney wants to simply annoy Trump without any further plan, even though the costs of angering him are painfully predictable. Fear of Trump saved the Liberals from electoral oblivion last year, so it’s not a stretch to imagine that it is being politically misappropriated, again.

The good news is that senior government officials confirm that the two per cent target remains firmly on track. For readers surprised that defence spending could advance so smoothly, despite historically slow procurement systems and few headline-grabbing announcements, here is the explanation: much of this early spending has been deliberate, foundational and largely invisible to the public. The most visible investment arrived last August with a significant boost to Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) pay and benefits. Taken together, these investments suggest the government is actually positioned to meet its two per cent commitment this fiscal year. To the ears of one Politico reporter , this was “a U.S. cabinet secretary cheering on a split in Canada.”U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent made his remarks about Alberta independence after returning from the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. (AP)This Trump administration heavyweight, one could clarify, wasn’t directly musing about Alberta becoming part of the United States. Pro-separation lawyer Jeffrey Rath said he's been talking Alberta independence with Trump administration officials, and becoming part of the United States hasn't been on the table. A solo Alberta would have a “common market” with the United States and zero tariffs, he said. He suggested that Alberta separatists may be interested in independence for now, but that would only be an intermediate measure.

GDB 53.0: Oilers need to show signs of life against the Capitals (8PM MT, CBC)The Edmonton Oilers are a couple of days removed from an embarrassing beatdown by the Penguins , and tonight’s game feels like it should come with a bit of a lecture. The Oilers dropped their last two games in horrific fashion, not because they were unlucky, but because they didn’t look particularly interested in playing winning hockey. Special teams are still an area where the Oilers should feel confident, assuming the boys actually show up ready to work. I don’t even care if they lose, provided that the effort is there and they look like they actually want to be playing hockey. – RoySandin – Van RiemsdykLindgrenWith the Capitals playing last night, I haven’t seen any updates on their line combos, aside from Jacob Chychrun being day-to-day.
