A man in his 20s was airlifted to the hospital with life-threatening injuries from a house fire in Surrey, B.C., Friday evening. Jeff Klaassen, Surrey fire chief, said the man had second and third-degree burns. Police officers attended the scene and are investigating the cause of the fire. The Surrey Police Service (SPS) says officers attended the scene and that the fire is not suspicious. The RCMP Surrey Provincial Operations Support Unit will handle the investigation, it continues, noting a fire investigator and forensics service attended the scene to assist.

The NDP leadership race could be turning into a nail-biter with no clear winner in sight. McPherson, the only sitting MP in the race, speaks during an NDP leadership forum in Ottawa last fall. Plus, Alberta NDP members now have the choice of opting out of federal membership. While the NDP leadership campaign has the makings of a compelling political news story, for those outside the party, it's hard to tell. The Newfoundland and Labrador government is expanding its ability to assess forest conditions with the purchase of 13 new weather stations. According to a list of recently released procurement contracts, in December the Department of Forestry, Agriculture and Lands awarded a contract for 13 new weather stations from British Columbia-based FTS Forest Technology Systems Ltd. for $466,927.42, exclusive of HST. CBC News asked for an interview with Forestry Minister Pleaman Forsey but spokesperson Linda Skinner sent an emailed statement on his behalf. On a daily basis, the statement said the province’s network of existing weather stations collects data on forest conditions, including temperature, relative humidity, wind, rain and moisture levels.
