Memorial University political scientist Kelly Blidook pulled no punches when asked what cost the Liberals the 2025 provincial election in Newfoundland and Labrador. Blidook believes the story haunted the Liberals throughout the election campaign last fall and was a key reason they lost to Tony Wakeham's Progressive Conservatives. "Every single member of that cabinet basically showed us that they are corrupt," Blidook told the St. John's Morning Show on Wednesday. And so ultimately, it was this corruption — I hope it was this corruption [that cost them the election]. Download our free CBC News app to sign up for push alerts for CBC Newfoundland and Labrador.

But November 2025’s federal budget formalized this, and doubled down on the flip flop, slashing the cap on temporary residents from 675,000 to 385,000. And more people than ever seem to approve, to view immigration broadly as a problem rather than a solution. Public attitudes that had been overall positive on immigration since the 1990s now have settled firmly into the negative. After the pandemic, immigration numbers “ratcheted up a lot,” Banerjee said, particularly for temporary residents such as foreign students and people with work permits. Much of the drop in temporary residents is coming from reduced numbers of foreign students.

Dallas requested defensive coordinator interviews with Jim Leonhard, Darontè Jones, Ephraim Banda, and checked on Jeff Ulbrich before Atlanta blocked it. The Cowboys have requested permission to speak with Minnesota defensive pass game coordinator Daronte Jones, Denver assistant HC/pass game coordinator Jim Leonhard and Browns safeties coach Ephraim Banda for their defensive coordinator vacancy, according to multiple sources. Jim Leonhard—The Broncos Young Defensive GuruLeonhard has been working in Denver as their defensive passing game coordinator. Darontè Jones—Vikings Experience that Fits Today’s LeagueJones is doing similar pass game coordinator work in Minnesota. As America levies consequences on the United Kingdom for its free speech transgressions, Canada must see this as a cautionary tale. The current White House has made it clear — most famously via Vice-President JD Vance’s February 2025 address in Munich — that it resents Europe’s slow rejection of personal liberties like free speech. On the free speech issue, thankfully Canada has not yet implemented its own online safety legislation. That draft legislation was broadly similar to the U.K.’s Online Safety Act, containing provisions that imposed significant fines and criminal liability for posting material online. It’s also crucial Canada remains supportive of free speech for its own sake — as it is an essential ingredient for an open, prosperous society.

OTTAWA — A new poll shows that tensions with Ottawa are declining in all four western provinces, with perceptions of the federal government improving especially rapidly in Alberta. In Alberta, feelings toward Ottawa improved by 13 points from a low of 38 per cent in late 2023. Matt Smith, Pollara’s lead for Western Canada, said the numbers show Prime Minister Mark Carney’s strategy of engagement with the region is working so far. Seven of the 13 projects put forward to the office so far are located in Western Canada, with B.C. Polling shows the MOU enjoys strong support across Western Canada.
