Power restored to most of Haines Junction, Yukon, after hours-long outage at -40 C
Power has been restored to most of Haines Junction after a problem earlier on Monday at the local generating station. The power went off on Monday morning following an exhaust leak at the station, ATCO Electric Yukon said in a statement late Monday afternoon. The temperature in the community was below –40 C, and the leak “prevented the facility from operating efficiently,” according to the company. This resulted in a full power outage to the community,” the statement read. Haines Junction resident Kari Johnston says she saw a huge plume of black smoke rising over the generating station as she drove into town around 11:40 a.m.

CBSA says 'fragile' IT systems are a 'top government risk' following border outages
The review found neither the CBSA nor Shared Services Canada (SSC) is prioritizing solutions to dated technology that should be declared "a top government risk." He said CBSA IT outages have been a common occurrence over the last decade. What caused the 2 outagesThe outages happened after two separate, planned IT changes: a database upgrade and a firewall patch. Patch led to communication breakdownWhile teams were dealing with the database issue, an emergency security patch was installed Sept. 29 on a CBSA system that helps airlines determine who is on the "no-fly list." The government will also seek a cultural change to "improve personal and collective accountability" after finding that the SSC is "not sufficiently aware of the real-world business impacts of CBSA system outages."

The last time Canada had a permanent military presence in Europe was following the Second World War and during the Cold War. WATCH | Canada's NATO presence in Latvia extended to 2029: Are the Armed Forces ready for an extended Latvian mission? Carney announced Canada’s NATO presence in Latvia will continue through to 2029, with aims to have a full cadre of 2,200 persistently deployed there sometime in 2026. At least one other NATO ally is already moving towards establishing a permanent military presence in the Baltic region. At the end of the Cold War, NATO promised Russia it would not establish permanent bases in Eastern Europe.

Canadian among fired workers from Grand Theft Auto studio says they just want their jobs back
The firing of several employees at the makers of the Grand Theft Auto video games came as a complete surprise, according to one of the Canadian workers who was let go this past fall. Thirty-one Rockstar employees working in the U.K. were fired the same day (new window). He called Rockstar's claims of the fired workers leaking confidential information patently false. They have not provided any proof for those claims, either for the Canadian workers or the U.K. workers, he said. The former Rockstar Toronto employee said that, ultimately, the fired workers both in Canada and the U.K. just want their jobs back.

Canadian economy shrank by 0.3% in October, the biggest slump in almost 3 years
The Canadian economy shrank by a greater-than-expected 0.3 per cent in October, the largest drop in almost three years, on weakness in both the goods and services sectors, official data showed on Tuesday. Analysts had forecast that growth would dip by 0.2 per cent from September as the economy continues to adjust to U.S. trade measures. Last month, Statistics Canada reported 0.2 per cent GDP growth for September, and Canada avoided a technical recession largely due to a surge in defence spending. Governor Tiff Macklem said on Dec. 10 that he expected GDP growth to be weak in the fourth quarter. "That will close out a very choppy year for Canadian growth in still-choppy fashion."

67% of Canadians prefer 'Merry Christmas' as greeting despite holiday stress: poll
Most Canadians will be inclined to wish others a Merry Christmas this season, but some of them will do so with the stress of the season hidden behind the festive greeting, a new survey has found. Polling of 1,002 adults in Canada conducted by Research Co. found that 67 per cent of Canadians prefer Merry Christmas when giving and receiving the seasonal salutation. More of those who voted for the Conservative Party of Canada in this year’s election (77 per cent) preferred Merry Christmas than did Liberal (63 per cent) or NDP (51 per cent) supporters. Conservative supporters (34 per cent), too, were more inclined to foresee stress than Liberal (28 per cent) or NDP (26 per cent) voters. As it has in previous years, the Vancouver-based firm also quizzed Canadians about classic holiday traditions and foods.

France’s national post office hit by suspected cyber-attack
The websites and apps of France’s national post office and its banking service have been hit by a suspected cyber-attack, disrupting deliveries and hampering online payments and transfers at the busiest time of the year, APA reports, citing The Guardian. French media reported that customers wanting to send last-minute parcels or collect items from post offices were being turned away. Online payments also remained possible but had to be authenticated via text message, it said. A 22-year-old suspect had been detained in relation to that incident, French media said. Prosecutors said last week that France’s counterespionage agency was investigating a suspected cyber-attack plot involving software that would have allowed remote users to control the computer systems of an international passenger ferry.
