By Samuel WatProminent northern leaders have been touting the Arctic economic and security corridor as a “nation-building” project that will bring economic benefits to the two territories it straddles, but others are split on how much good will come out of it. Amanda Dumond, the manager of the Kugluktuk Hunters and Trappers Organization (HTO), isn’t sold on the benefits of the project. But the economic benefits to communities in the neighbourhood, if you will, have been profound,” he said. There’s also the Arctic security aspect to the project. However, Nunavut NDP MP Lori Idlout says there’s a clear distinction between bolstering Arctic security, and Arctic sovereignty, and she doesn’t believe there’s much emphasis on the latter with this project.

The Nova Scotia Court of Appeal reduced Cope’s original sentence, but Crown attorney Erica Koresawa took the case to the supreme court. A 2019 amendment to the Criminal Code required courts to give “primary consideration” to deterring violence against Indigenous women — a response to the recommendations of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. First Nations, Métis and Inuit women and girls are also six times more likely to be killed than non-Indigenous women and girls. Mesher believes this Supreme Court case could also affect the way Gladue reports are delivered. Looking outside the courtroomEven as a lawyer, Iqaluit’s Anne Crawford doesn’t believe changes in the judicial process will adequately protect Indigenous women.

This set him down a lifelong path to try and figure out just what all their singing actually means. Whale songs are not quite like human songs or bird songs, in that they don't have a start and stop. And if you monitor what they're doing, you'll realize that they're cycling through a fixed sequence of patterns. When the whales are singing, they’re by themselves, and almost always they're not moving. When the whales are singing, they’re by themselves, and almost always they're not moving.

Trump’s four-month pressure campaign on Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro began with the stated purpose of stemming the flow of illegal drugs from the South American nation but has developed into something more amorphous. Trump announces 'blockade' of sanctioned oil tankersTrump and his administration have defended its military's actions but haven't explained the motivations behind its pressure campaign on Maduro. China is biggest buyer of Venezuelan crudeSince the Coast Guard's first tanker seizure, Venezuelan crude exports have fallen sharply. Now it could be put on the map for an entirely different reason: low-carbon, sustainable jet fuel. The company describes the products as “two critical low-carbon fuels for decarbonizing the transportation sector.”The project would proceed in two phases. The jet fuel plant would require 60 truckloads of biomass (wood waste) per day and 586 cubic meters of fresh water per hour, which would be pulled from two nearby lakes. Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is a cleaner alternative to traditional jet fuel, made from sustainable sources such as biofuels, biomass, and captured carbon from oil and gas operations. SAF has another Canadian connection in Parkland Corporation, which in 2024 produced the first batch of made-in-Canada low-carbon jet fuel from its facility in Burnaby, British Columbia, just outside of Vancouver.

OTTAWA — As Prime Minister Mark Carney ushers in a new era of climate policy for the Liberals, a key decision is hanging over the governing party’s approach to electric vehicles. The regulation requires manufacturers to hit certain sales targets for zero-emission vehicles, with those targets progressively rising until all new vehicle sales are zero emissions by 2035. Carney launched a 60-day review of the policy back in September, pausing the requirement for 2026, which would have mandated that 20 per cent of new vehicle sales be zero-emission. The federal definition only includes plug-in battery hybrids and fully electric vehicles or ones powered by hydrogen fuel cells. Doran nevertheless points to examples like the European Union, where more affordable models of electric vehicles remain available, including from Japanese and South Korean automakers.
