Promoting diversity sounds better than practicing discrimination, but the two have gone hand in hand in our universities and other public settings. As the Post’s Tristin Hopper observed: Canadian universities have engaged in race-centric hiring and admissions, and in some cases, race-segregated student spaces and events. The question is not whether racial, gender or other attributes can be taken into consideration in faculty appointments and student admissions. The question, rather, is how far one can go in permitting what would otherwise be unlawful discrimination in the name of affirmative action.

STM constable facing assault charges over Metro station intervention
A special constable with the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) is facing assault charges over an intervention at the Berri-UQAM Metro station a little over a year ago, marking a first in the public transit agency's history. This is the first time a special constable with the STM faces charges after using force in the performance of their duties. The STM's special constables have been subject to BEI investigations since becoming peace officers in 2021. In this case, the victim was not seriously injured but the BEI became involved by virtue of the victim being Cree, said BEI spokesperson Jérémie Comtois. The public transit agency employs 180 special constables who have been equipped with cayenne pepper gel since September 2023.

London ride-hailing driver accused of sexually assaulting teen passenger: police
A 29-year-old London man is facing several charges after police allege he sexually assaulted a teenage girl he picked up as a passenger while driving for a ride-hailing service. Police allege the driver diverted from the route, and took the girl to a parking lot near Deveron Crescent and Commissioners Road East and sexually assaulted her. The accused is charged with sexual assault, invitation to sexual touching under 16, and sexual interference with a person under 16, police said. Accused was driving for Uber, company saysWhile London police did not state which ride-hailing service the accused was driving for, Uber confirmed to CBC News that it was their platform. Credit ratings agency takes notice of N.S. finances
Another of the major credit rating agencies is taking notice of the Nova Scotia government’s finances. Finance Minister John Lohr said he pays close attention to what the credit rating agencies have to say but he’s also confident in his government’s plan and opportunities for the future. “I am confident that this province will prosper economically,” he told reporters. The report from DBRS follows a credit rating downgrade for the province earlier this month by ratings agency S&P. Lohr said the risk of another downgrade would be an increase to the cost of borrowing.
