Talks to form South Africa’s first national coalition government are expected to begin this week after the governing ANC party lost its majority for the first time. On a more serious note, the president pledged that the ANC — which got 40 percent of the vote — would work with other parties to find “common ground” as coalition talks get underway. The ANC has had a majority for 30 years, since the end of apartheid, so governing in a coalition marks unchartered territory. The first one is obviously a coalition with, a formal coalition with, the Democratic Alliance and the IFP,” Verwoerd said. The IFP is the Inkatha Freedom Party, a small opposition party popular with the Zulu people.

Professor Mesfin Araya, Chief Commissioner, Ethiopian National Dialogue Commission (Photo: Ethiopian Press Agency)Addis Abeba – The National Dialogue Commission has reported the successful completion of a week-long agenda gathering and consultation meetings in the capital Addis Abeba. Participants to represent Addis Abeba in the dialogue to be held at the national level have also been selected. This comes amid growing calls for the inclusion of key stakeholders including armed groups that are engaged in militarized conflict with the government into the national dialogue process. The Ethiopian Political Parties Joint Council forewarned that the dialogue may fail to produce results without the participation of all parties including armed groups, Sheger radio reported. Earlier, the Caucus of Opposition Parties, an umbrella group of eleven opposition parties in Ethiopia, accused the NDC of failing to fulfill its stated purpose of facilitating an “inclusive” national dialogue.

At Desta, Bernard said she can comfortably treat ten people to cocktails and a hearty meal for less than $100. She’s the next generation to carry on the regular, family tradition of gathering together for an Ethiopian meal at Desta in Atlanta.

Somalia will expel thousands of Ethiopian troops stationed in the country to help with security by the end of the year unless Addis Ababa scraps a disputed port deal with the breakaway region of Somaliland, a senior Somali official said on Monday. Ethiopia offered Somaliland possible recognition in exchange for being allowed to set up a naval base and commercial port – a move Mogadishu has called illegal. Spokespeople for the Ethiopian government and the Ethiopian National Defence Forces (ENDF) did not respond to requests for comment. The African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), which is mandated by the U.N. Security Council, is due to fully withdraw and hand over security responsibilities to the Somali state by the end of 2024. But the Somali government has requested several times for the withdrawal of troops to be slowed down, citing setbacks on the battlefield.

As Sudan’s civil war spirals deeper into turmoil, activists are remembering friends and loved ones killed during pro-democracy protests in Khartoum on June 3, 2019. That movement continued after the imposition of military rule, eventually leading to what has become known as the “Khartoum Massacre”. How have pro-democracy activists been impacted by the war? Pro-democracy activists have been detained, tortured and killed by both belligerents in the war, al-Qadous said. Pro-democracy activists have long decried the lack of accountability for both belligerents in the war.

The Tigray war erupted in November, 2020, when the Ethiopian military moved into the Tigray region of northern Ethiopia in a bid to crush an autonomy movement by the regional government. The war formally ended with a peace agreement in November, 2022, although some atrocities have continued since then. Opinion: The Tigray deal could end the war in Ethiopia – but implementation won’t be easyThe new study found evidence that genocidal acts were committed against Tigrayans by the Ethiopian National Defence Force (ENDF) and its allies: the Amhara Special Forces (ASF) and the Eritrean Defence Forces (EDF). There is a reasonable basis to conclude that these groups “possessed the intent to destroy Tigrayans as an ethnic group,” the report said. Many of the victims died from hunger and malnutrition after Ethiopia imposed a blockade on Tigray, preventing humanitarian aid from reaching the region.

Report says Ethiopia and allies had ‘intent to destroy Tigrayans as an ethnic group’ and calls for prosecution at ICJ. There is compelling evidence that Ethiopian forces committed genocidal acts during the Tigray war, a new report has concluded. In a report issued last September, the United Nations said war crimes and crimes against humanity were still being committed nearly a year after government and Tigrayan regional forces agreed to end the fighting. The New Lines Institute report now states that there is sufficient evidence that Ethiopia engaged in actions violating the Genocide Convention including the targeting of civilians with mass killings and starvation tactics. Ethiopia, which has been accused of seeking to prevent international scrutiny, has repeatedly denied that its forces carried out war crimes during the conflict.

The US says the onus is on Hamas to accept the deal, but confusion continues to build over Israel’s stance. Israel has confirmed that four of the captives held in Gaza were likely killed during air raids on the enclave. The news is likely to increase pressure on Israel’s government to agree to a ceasefire with Hamas. Pressure pointThe news of the men’s deaths will add to the pressure on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to seal a deal that would see the remaining captives released. The US has vetoed multiple resolutions calling for a ceasefire in Gaza as it continues to fund and arm Israel amid the war despite growing international criticism.

The FAA 's decision is likely to exacerbate an existing backlog of orders from airlines, including significant commitments from African carriers like Ethiopian Airlines and Kenya Airways . At the Dubai Airshow last year, Ethiopian Airlines ordered 11 787 Dreamliners and 20 737 MAX jets, which may now face delays due to the production limitations. The FAA will monitor Boeing 's progress in addressing quality and safety improvements before reconsidering the production cap. Boeing has faced a series of setbacks, starting in February when the FAA barred it from increasing 737 MAX production after a door panel blew out during a January 5 flight on a new 737 MAX 9. Earlier in the year, a section of an Alaska Airlines 737 MAX 9 separated from the aircraft shortly after takeoff.

In a significant move, Somalia has threatened to expel thousands of Ethiopian troops stationed in the country to assist with security, by the end of the year unless Ethiopia cancels a controversial port deal with the breakaway region of Somaliland. Currently, around 3,000 Ethiopian soldiers are posted in Somalia as part of the African Union peacekeeping mission (ATMIS) in Somalia, aimed at combating the militant group al-Shabaab. Additionally, an estimated 5,000-7,000 Ethiopian troops are stationed in various regions of Somalia under a bilateral agreement between the two countries. Ethiopia offered Somaliland possible recognition in exchange for being allowed to set up a naval base and commercial port – a move Mogadishu has called illegal. Somalia has urged for a new, smaller peacekeeping mission to be announced by the end of June, with the exclusion of Ethiopian troops.

ADDIS ABABA, June 3 (Xinhua) -- The Ethiopia-Djibouti Standard Gauge Railway Share Company (EDR) and Ethiopia's state-owned logistics enterprise, Ethiopian Shipping and Logistics (ESL), have signed an agreement to join forces to modernize Ethiopia's logistics sector. The Chinese-built 752-km Ethiopia-Djibouti railway is fast becoming Ethiopia's preferred route for imports and exports. According to the EDR, more than 15 percent of Ethiopia's overall import and export trade is currently conducted via this railway. According to the EDR, some 98 percent of Ethiopia's entire coffee export, a cornerstone of the country's agriculture-led economy, now passes through the Ethiopia-Djibouti railway. Last month, the Chinese management consortium of the Ethiopia-Djibouti railway officially transferred the management responsibility of Africa's first electrified cross-border railway to Ethiopia and Djibouti after six years of successful operation.
