Boeing has selected Ethiopia as the location for its African headquarters, favoring it over Kenya and South Africa due to Ethiopia’s exemplary aviation safety record. This decision is perhaps the result of Ethiopian Airlines’ strong commitment to Boeing, including becoming the company’s first African customer for the Boeing 777X and last year’s order of 11 Boeing 787 Dreamliners and 20 Boeing 737 Max planes, despite the aerospace company’s recent challenges. To head the new establishment, Boeing appointed Henok Shawl, a former Ethiopian Airlines’ employee with extensive experience in aviation and telecommunications. Boeing projects that African carriers will need 1,030 new aircraft over the next two decades to meet international standards and its decision to set up shop on the continent is likely influenced by this development. The process of setting up Nigeria Air (NWB, Lagos) will remain suspended indefinitely as it was never a genuine Nigerian project and just Ethiopian Airlines trying to fly the Nigerian flag, according to Nigerian aviation minister Festus Keyamo. "It was not Air Nigeria [sic]. It was never Air Nigeria. Air Nigeria will be indigenous for the whole of Nigeria and for the full benefit of Nigeria, not with 60% of the profits going to another country. Nigeria Air was proposed by the previous administration under former president Muhammadu Buhari and former aviation minister Hadi Sirika.

BEIJING: China’s President Xi Jinping called on Monday for efforts to promote high-quality and sufficient jobs for college graduates and migrant workers, while presiding over a Politburo group study session, state media Xinhua reported on Tuesday. The Xinhua report did not give details on job promotion support measures or plans. The survey-based jobless rate for 16-24 year-olds, excluding college students, was 14.7 percent in April, down from 15.3 percent in March, official data showed last week. China’s statistics bureau revised its methodology by removing college students from the survey pool after youth jobless rate surged to around 20 percent last year. Xi also said the government should take steps to promote the employment of migrant workers, guide them to return to their hometowns and for people to start businesses in the countryside.
