I know I might be accused of singing the old Fabian lullaby to make a hero out of a confirmed loser. I am not saying that Doolittle is a quiet person; on the contrary he is noisy but he speaks for the overwhelming majority of impoverished city dwellers when he screams for no particular reason-we are intimidated, Governor! The government’s effort to involve the multitude in a nationwide dialogue by founding a Commission to undertake the responsibility is laudable. No wonder the Commission has resorted to running ads on City Buses-Ethiopia is Engaged in Dialogue reads one such ads. No wonder they have lost their voices sharing ground with folks whose concern and problems they hardly relate to.

Going into the men’s 5000m, many eyes were on world record-holder and Olympic champion Joshua Cheptegei, two-time world cross-country champion Jacob Kiplimo and last year’s Bislett Games winner Yomif Kejelcha. Gebrhiwet’s winning time is just 1.37 seconds shy of the world record Cheptegei set in 2020 and moves him to second on the world all-time list, one place ahead of Kenenisa Bekele, whose Ethiopian record Gebrhiwet broke. He controlled the pace in the second half, but still had 2019 world champion Timothy Cheruiyot for company on the final lap. But 2022 world champion Alison Dos Santos was close behind and started to gain on the Norwegian down the home straight. The 2022 world champion produced a second-round throw of 67.89m to beat multiple world and Olympic champion Sandra Elkasevic (66.48m), both women producing season’s bests.
