Ethiopian launches online certification system for trade in agricultural commodities
Ethiopia has embarked on a transformation of its agricultural sector by launching the development of Integrated Export and Import Certification System (IEICS), also known as the e-Phyto system. This digital initiative, a collaboration between the Ethiopian Agricultural Authority (EAA), and TradeMark Africa (TMA), aims to streamline the trade process for agricultural exports and imports. The e-Phyto system, poised to replace archaic manual and paper-based certification processes, represents a significant leap forward for Ethiopia’s agricultural sector. Through seamless integration with international phytosanitary certificate systems, the e-Phyto system will provide end-to-end paperless services for both import and export certification, from application submission to certificate issuance. Ethiopian Agricultural Authority (EAA) Deputy Director and Head of Ethiopian NPPO, Ato Wondale Habtamu, expressed that the Ethiopian agricultural sector’s transition to an e-Phyto system aligns with global trends towards more sustainable and inclusive economic practices.

EIC, SCCI agree to establish consortium of companies in Ethiopia

Jemal Beker Abdula, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ethiopia to Pakistan and Atif Sharif Mian, Ambassador of Pakistan in Ethiopia witnessed the signing ceremony. This significant agreement lays the groundwork for enhanced bilateral trading cooperation between the business communities of Pakistan and Ethiopia through joint ventures. The signing ceremony marked a pivotal step in fostering stronger economic ties and exploring new investment opportunities between the two nations. She assured the Sialkot Chamber’s President that the Ethiopian government provided full protection to foreign investment, and also facilitated foreign investors in all-possible ways.

Ethiopian Toll Roads Enterprise Collects Birr 748 Million in Nine Months
Ethiopian Toll Roads Enterprise (ETRE) announced impressive results for the first nine months of the 2023/24 fiscal year. It collected over Birr 748 million Birr in tolls from more than 8.4 million vehicles traveling on their three highways. ETRE's performance included Birr 75.6 million earned from miscellaneous income and a pre-tax profit of Birr 415 million, reflecting a 29% increase compared to the same period last year. Currently, over 30,780 vehicles use ETRE roads daily. Sentayehu Mekonen acknowledged challenges such as resource theft, reduced night traffic due to safety concerns, and rising maintenance costs.

Financing loan for Ethiopia, South Sudan cross-border highway tabled to South Sudan parliament

It was initially signed by South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit in 2023. Minister Ruben told South Sudan’s Transitional National Legislative Assembly that the the agreement, signed on May 18, 2023, Ethiopia and South Sudan, “designates South Sudan as the borrower and Ethiopia as the financier,” local media quoted him as saying. “In terms of crude oil payment, the borrower will repay the equivalent amount on the due date or in cash. The loan repayment will be determined based on the price difference between the Arab Gulf and the delivery date of crude oil.

Michael Wells has a background in developmental psychology, and a PhD in Women's and Children's Health. His primary research focuses on parental mental health (e.g. depressive symptoms, anxiety, fear of childbirth, parent-infant bonding disturbances), as well as how both clinicians and interventions can help strengthen parental mental health from pregnancy through early childhood. "As my research continued on promoting parental support and improving parental mental health as they transition into parenthood, I became part of a team to implement a new clinical visit for fathers/non-birthing parents at the child health centers when the infant is 3-5 months old." Within which he work with several sub-Saharan African countries at improving maternal and newborn health via utilizing known evidenced-based practices.

EWU sociologist studies the cross-cultural identity of second-generation Ethiopian Americans and how they influence their communities
Recently, his research has delved into the identity development of second-generation Ethiopian Americans and how the Ethiopian diaspora (dispersed from their homeland) advocates for democracy across international borders. The associate professor of sociology and justice studies at Eastern Washington University says there are a few facets of his research into the Ethiopian American transnational identity. "But overall, [second-generation immigrants] are thriving in this environment because the U.S. is more welcoming than it used to be." In 2013, the U.S. Census reported that second-generation immigrants are much better off, in socioeconomic terms, than their parents. But Kebede's research doesn't compare second-generation Ethiopian Americans with their parents — he compares them with everyone else in their same age group.

How financing farmers advance Africa’s agriculture industry – New Business
The need to create innovative financing mechanisms for Africa’s farmers and revaluate existing ones is becoming increasingly critical as the continent faces compounded challenges, including climate change, low productivity, and conflict. The agricultural sector is the economic backbone of Africa, where an estimated 33 million smallholder farms and the farmers who live on them contribute to 70% of the continent’s food supply. Climate change also modifies the properties of soil, both chemically and physically leading to land degradation. The president of the African agricultural transformation institution, AGRA, Dr Agnes Kalibata, estimates that land degradation costs farmers up to $1,400 per year. Substantial investment in Africa’s agricultural sector is needed, however, the visible impacts of climate change have caused investors to be wary.

Newcomers Discover Ararat in Settlement Activity Tour
Council hosted the first of several planned bus tours as part of its Ararat Settlement Activity program, a project delivered with funding received from the Wyndham Community Education Centre. Previously named the Ararat New Settlement Program - a highly successful venture, which attracted over 40 new residents into secure, long-term jobs - this event is a continuation of the partnership between Council and the Wyndham Community Education Centre. The tour began at Windham Community Education Centre's offices, with an early chartered bus pick-up of 10 participants, whose nationalities included Burmese, Chin, Kongo and Ethiopian. While this tour focused on attracting job seekers from Melbourne's western suburbs, the program also extends to other culturally and linguistically diverse job seekers looking for a new start in Ararat. "The Ararat Settlement Activity bus tour is a terrific way to showcase the potential of our community to newcomers seeking a new start," says Ararat Rural City Council CEO, Dr Tim Harrison.
