The film is set at a Chinese industrial complex in Dukem, a small town southeast of Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa. Despite an imbalance in perspectives, “Made in Ethiopia” ends up presenting a compelling narrative about how Chinese influence in Ethiopia impacts both expats and native people.

Citizens will cast ballots to elect 720 members of the European Parliament. Seats in the assembly are allocated based on population, ranging from six in Malta or Luxembourg to 96 in Germany. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, right, and lead candidate Katarina Barley wave to supporters during the closing rally campaign for the European Parliament election of the German Social Democrats (SPD) in Duisburg, Germany, on June 8, 2024. Beyond the wrangling to form political groups and establish alliances inside parliament, governments will compete to secure top EU jobs for their national officials. But despite their important role, political campaigning often focuses on issues of concern in individual countries rather than on broader European interests.

(Photo: AFP)Addis Abeba – The Ethiopian Refugees and Returnees Service (RRS) has announced efforts to relocate Sudanese refugees who have fled their shelters in the Amhara region. Tamirat Demisse, coordinator of the Kumar, Awlala, and Alemwach refugee centers, told Voice of America that the process of relocating Sudanese refugees to a new site called “Aftet” in the West Gondar Zone has begun. A month ago, around 1,000 Sudanese refugees left the Kumar and Awlala refugee sites located in the Amhara region due to security concerns and inadequate services. The UNHCR has reported that the refugees recently initiated a hunger strike, exacerbating the already tense security situation in the area. In its latest report, the UNHCR emphasized that Sudanese refugees living in camps in the Amhara and Benishangul-Gumuz regions near the Sudanese border confront severe challenges, including insufficient security, significant food shortages, and inadequate medical care.

This suggests that the parallel market premium— which is calculated as the ratio of the parallel market rate to the official rate less one—has increased to a new high. Foreign currency is also siphoned via illegal money transfers, an unofficial money transfer route that works outside of the banking system. Ethiopians in the diaspora transmit foreign currency to intermediaries, who pay beneficiaries in local currency at the parallel market rate, according to the report. Several traders also rely on the parallel market to access foreign currency to import goods and services as getting foreign currency from the legal channel is increasingly difficult.
