A bill to protect sex workers from unfair discrimination and decriminalise the industry passed the state parliament on Thursday. The reforms will repeal criminal offences applying specifically to sex workers, create new offences to protect children and specifically prohibit a person being coerced to perform sex work. In the ACT, some forms of sex work are legal, but laws mandate condom use and criminalise street-based sex work and co-operative working arrangements. A review by the Queensland Law Reform Commission in April 2023 made 47 recommendations to decriminalise sex work. The state has 20 licensed brothels and most sex work occurs outside the regulated or licensed sector.

In September 2023, Girma Amente, Minister of Agriculture, unveiled the government’s robust plan to procure 23 million quintals of fertilizer for the current harvest, signaling a marked increase from the previous seasons. This year’s fertilizer procurement is nearly twice the 14 million quintals of fertilizer imported in the previous harvesting season. The Corporation has indicated that of the total fertilizer procured for this season’s harvest, 12 million quintals (52% of the total) have been received at the Djibouti port. The initial consignment of fertilizers designated for this harvest season began arriving at the Djibouti port by late October 2023. Last year, the timely delivery of these vital agricultural inputs to small-scale farmers across the country was marred by significant disruptions.

Some 60 per cent of migrants and refugees surveyed say it is more difficult for those without English as their first language to secure affordable housing. About half of migrants and refugees polled (49 per cent) felt they were unfairly blamed as the main cause of Australia's housing affordability crisis. Experts have called for the private rental market to be regulated with input and enforcement from industry bodies.

This long and rich history is now on display in Salem at the Peabody Essex Museum. The “Ethiopia at the Crossroads” exhibition, on display through July 7, is part of a traveling exhibition that originated at the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore and will end at the Toledo Museum of Art. Over Zoom last week, Christine Sciacca, the creator of the “Ethiopia” exhibition and curator at the Walters Art Museum, joked that she got her current position because she pitched the idea for “Ethiopia” in her interview eight years ago. Sciacca is proud to see her vision come to life, but it wasn’t without the help of the Ethiopian community in the D.C. area — the largest Ethiopian diasporic community outside Africa. She interned at the Walters years ago and worked with the Ethiopian art collection.

We have become an enabler of the humanitarian response into Gaza,” said Charles Mungo Birch, chief of the UNMAS mine action program in the Palestinian territories. “That convoy evacuated over 30 premature babies, which we returned to southern Gaza, and only one of them died,” he said. UNMAS estimates there are 37 million tons of rubble in Gaza, amounting to 300 kilos (660 pounds) per square meter of surface. Last year, UNMAS recorded 1,500 victims of explosive ordnance in the Tigray and Afar regions in northern Ethiopia, with men and young boys accounting for 80% of the victims. But there is no humanitarian clearance happening in the county because of not having authorization for organizations to do so,” she said.
