Speaking at a luncheon hosted by Kenyan President William Ruto in Nairobi, Ahmed added that their bilateral ties were a role model that would work to "liberate Africa not only politically but also economically." Ruto welcomed Ahmed to Nairobi on Wednesday, where the leaders discussed Ethiopia’s negotiations with the breakaway region of Somaliland to secure access to a seaport. The armed conflict between the Ethiopian army and rebels in the country’s northern Amhara region continues, with the government recently accused of massacring civilians in the region. However, this is false: the photos were originally published on Facebook by the Amhara Region Police Commission after they confiscated weapons and ammunition being transported illegally from the Tigray region to Amhara. Menz and Jiru are towns in the northern Shewa zone in the Amhara region. However, the photos do not show firearms captured by the Fano rebel force in Amhara. Search results revealed the images were published on the Amhara Region Police Commission's official Facebook page on February 7, 2024 (archived here).

The IPI global network condemns the arrest and continued detention of French journalist Antoine Galindo over allegations of conspiracy with armed groups for conducting media interviews. We call on Ethiopian authorities to immediately and unconditionally release Galindo, and ensure journalists can undertake their work freely and safely. Galindo, who works for the online news outlet Africa Intelligence (AI), was arrested on February 22 at the Ethiopia Skylight Hotel. Reports indicate that he was in the country to undertake media coverage of the annual summit of the African Union and other news that he had obtained the requisite visa. The authorities in Ethiopia have also frequently shut down the internet and restricted communication and access to information in these areas.

There are queer folks in my church. There are queer folks in your church too, whether you know it or not. Earlier this month, it became clear that my own church was not safe for our LGBTQ congregants. To my church’s credit, the outpouring of support for the LGBTQ folks in our congregation was immediate and strong despite the fact that not all our members are aligned on LGBTQ inclusion. But is my church safe if such a thing can happen there?

Suozzi’s entrance into Congress further narrows an already slim GOP majority in Congress, which now holds 219 Republicans and 213 Democrats. That means the GOP can only lose two votes to pass a measure, a task made even more difficult by potential absences and divisions across the House Republican Conference. Former New York Democratic Rep. Brian Higgins resigned from Congress earlier this month, former Ohio GOP Rep. Bill Johnson resigned last month and former Speaker Kevin McCarthy resigned at the end of last year. Suozzi won’t be a newcomer to Congress; he represented a previous version of New York’s 3rd Congressional District for three terms. The seat Santos originally won was among the Biden districts in New York that flipped in 2022, helping deliver the GOP majority in Congress.

Somalia has signed security deals with the United States, Turkey and Uganda in recent weeks as multiplying tensions in the Horn of Africa raise fears of possible armed conflicts in the region. An agreement signed with Washington commits the U.S. to building five military bases for the Somali army to bolster the counter’s military capacity amid ongoing threats from the extremist group al-Shabab, while a 10-year security deal with Turkey is aimed at strengthening Somalia’s naval force and to help patrol its 2000-mile country’s coastline. Somalia has also signed an agreement to deepen its military collaboration with Uganda. The deals underscore Mogadishu’s ambitions to bolster its security, as it faces a persistent internal threat from al-Shabab, with peacekeeping forces from the African Union set to pull out in December. Meanwhile, Somalia’s vow to stop an Ethiopian deal to lease a port in the breakaway region of Somaliland has sparked concerns of a conflict with Ethiopia.
