Amnesty International says Ethiopian National Defense Force extrajudicially executed civilians in Bahir Dar

WTO, ITC launch global fund for women exporters – New Business Ethiopia
The Women Exporters in the Digital Economy (WEIDE) Fund will help women-led businesses and women entrepreneurs in developing economies and least-developed countries adopt digital technologies and expand the online presence of their enterprises. WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala said: “Digital trade, and more specifically digitally delivered services trade, is the fastest growing segment of international trade – growing at 8% on average since 2005. This new Fund is a significant step, enabling brilliant women entrepreneurs to find the capital they need to turn ideas into successful and growing companies. Participants discussed concrete solutions to the challenges facing women entrepreneurs and explored opportunities for women to access new markets in an increasingly green and digital global trading system. This brings the number of ITC SheTrades Hubs worldwide to 17, including two regional Hubs.

French journalist arrested in Ethiopia accused of ‘conspiracy to create chaos’
Ethiopian authorities have detained a visiting French journalist for being part of a “conspiracy to create chaos” in the east African country. Galindo was in Ethiopia to report on the annual summit of the African Union and other news, according to AI. However, his government cracked down on dissent during the 2020-2022 war in the northern Tigray region and expelled foreign journalists or denied them visas. Several foreign journalists were expelled during the Tigray war, but the country rarely detains foreign journalists for extended periods. Ethiopia is now grappling with rebellions in Oromia and Amhara, its two biggest regions, where government forces have been accused of abuses.

ADDIS ABABA: A French journalist has been arrested and detained in Ethiopia since February 22 on suspicion of conspiring “to create chaos” in the country, his employer announced on Monday. The 36-year-old journalist, who heads the publication’s East Africa section, lived in Ethiopia between 2013 and 2017 and was “known to the Ethiopia Media Authority,” which oversees media accreditations in the country. Ethiopia has expelled several foreign journalists since the end of 2020. Prior to Galindo’s detention, Ethiopian authorities had not arrested a foreign journalist in more than three years. In July 2020, a Kenyan journalist was detained for more than a month in Addis Ababa, despite an Ethiopian court ordering his release on bail.

Ethiopian Delegation Participating in the 13th WTO Ministerial Conference

The delegation includes Trade and Regional Integration Minister and Chief Negotiator for Ethiopia’s accession to WTO, Chala Gebremeskel, Foreign Affairs State Minister, Ambassador Mesganu Arga, and Finance State Minister, Eyob Tekalign (PhD). The conference started with an opening session, followed by a ceremony to mark the accessions of Comoros and Timor-Leste, as well as a ceremony for acceptance of the Fisheries Subsidies Agreement. Two “ministerial conversations” will be held on “Trade and Sustainable Development, including Trade and Industrial Policy and Policy Space for Industrial Development” and on “Trade and Inclusion”. Gebremeskel stated on Sunday that Ethiopia is aggressively working towards finalizing its accession to the WTO.

News: Amnesty International accuses Ethiopian Defense Force of ‘extrajudicial executions’ in Amhara region
In its most recent statement, Amnesty International has accused the Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) of unlawfully killing civilians in Bahir Dar City, the capital of the Amhara region (Photo: Bahir Dar City Culture & Tourism Bureau/Facebook). Amnesty International said it has verified the “extrajudicial execution of six people by ENDF soldiers” on 10 and 11 October, 2023. Three different people interviewed by Amnesty International said that ENDF soldiers killed Tadesse’s three sons and one person who rented a room inside his compound. Chagutah added that the alleged executions may amount to war crimes under international law and represent violations of the right to life under human rights law. Amnesty International states that the impact of the conflict in Amhara has been obscured by an internet shutdown, communications blackouts, and emergency rule limiting media and speech.

Nor was there any doubt about the culpability of the FAA and Boeing in the first MAX crisis in 2018-2019. Because Congress for decades failed to appropriate the bucks needed for the FAA to do its job without overreliance on Boeing or Spirit. By contrast, the FAA moved with lightning speed in 2013 to ground the Boeing 787. Since the MAX crisis, certification of the 777X will be at least six years later than planned and a big write-off has been taken.

Somalia Stands Firm Against Ethiopia’s Naval Base Deal In Somaliland
Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has issued a stern warning, claiming that Somalia will “defend itself” if Ethiopia continues with plans to create a naval base in Somaliland. The controversy arises from Ethiopia’s recent memorandum of understanding, signed on January 1st, to lease a 20-kilometer coastline region in Somaliland. Despite Somalia’s claim to control the territory, Ethiopia intends to establish a naval presence in Somaliland, which has operated autonomously since 1991. The history of violence between Somalia and Ethiopia, especially territorial conflicts in the late twentieth century, overshadows the current scenario. Access to the Gulf of Aden via Somaliland would provide Ethiopia with an important naval base, especially after losing its Red Sea coastline following Eritrea’s secession in 1993.

Ethiopian government sends formal request to cancel auction of shield looted from Maqdala in 1868
An Ethiopian shield, looted at the battle of Maqdala in 1868, is due to be auctioned on Thursday in Newcastle upon Tyne. The shield is included by Anderson & Garland in their eclectic sale billed as “The Collectors' Auction”. The central boss has been inscribed "Magdala 13th April 1868”, the date of battle (now known as Maqdala) at which British forces defeated the Ethiopian emperor Tewodros II. On 23 February the director general of the Ethiopian Heritage Authority, Abebaw Ayalew, wrote to Anderson & Garland, saying that the shield had been “wrongfully acquired in a context of a punitive expedition to Ethiopia”. He points out that in 2021 a Busby auction in Bridport of looted horn cups seized at Maqdala was cancelled after the Ethiopian authorities intervened.

Ethiopia is the second-biggest jailer of journalists in sub-Saharan Africa, CPJ said, and joined calls for Galindo’s immediate release.

The airlines in question were Ethiopian Airlines (Ethiopia 602), and Qatar Airline (Qatari 6U). The breakaway region of Somaliland has been wrangling with the federal government over Somalia’s airspace. Somaliland is fighting for international recognition but remains part of Somalia, thus using permissions from Mogadishu on airspace control.
