According to residents who spoke with the BBC, clashes have been reported in West and North Gojjam, North Shewa, and North Wollo zones, with roads being blocked off. Intense battles have also occurred around areas such as Gondar, Merawi, Dega Damot, Shewa Robit, Antsokiyana Gemza, and Lalibela since late last week, residents said. In Merawi town, Saturday saw hours of heavy gunfire exchanges near government offices between security personnel and Fano militants. Contrary to these reports, the Amhara regional government’s communication bureau issued a statement today asserting that “relative peace has prevailed in most areas of our region” due to strengthened community support for security efforts.

Ethiopian security forces detained a French journalist on suspicion of conspiring with two armed groups to incite unrest in Addis Ababa, an accusation that has been strongly denied by his employer and a rights group. Indigo Publications group, the publisher of Africa Intelligence, called for the reporter's immediate release in a statement and said the journalist was detained on suspicion of "conspiracy to create chaos in Ethiopia." The journalist was detained at the Ethiopian Skylight Hotel in the capital Addis Ababa while while interviewing a political officer with the Oromo Liberation Front (ORF), a party legally recognized in Ethiopia, his lawyer said. Galindo had arrived in Addis Ababa on 13 February to cover an African Union summit as well as news in the country.

A French journalist on assignment in Ethiopia is in custody after being arrested in the capital, Addis Ababa. He was detained Thursday and a court on Saturday ordered that the journalist be held until March 1. Africa Intelligence in a statement said that a lawyer for the publication attended the hearing Saturday. Quintal said that Ethiopia has a “dismal” press freedom record and is detaining at least eight other journalists. The Paris-based Reporters Without Borders or RSF said in a statement that Galindo’s arrest comes amid a difficult climate for media in Ethiopia.
