Ms Kealey said she was contacted by Ms Hand in the days after the alleged incident, claiming she had been raped. Asked for her reaction, Ms Kealey said: “I was surprised because I didn’t see anything. Mr McGregor has not attended court on Wednesday as he had food poisoning overnight, according to Mr Farrell.

Four extra screens and a new restaurant are being planned at Athlone cinema, according to a planning application lodged with Westmeath County Council. Cinema Properties Limited is seeking planning permission for an extension and upgrade works to the existing six screen IMC Cinema at Golden Island Shopping Centre. The planned works involved the construction of four additional screens, and a new restaurant adjoining the extended cinema building. The planning application notes that demolition works are required to the existing cinema to facilitate the new extension. The plans also include provision for a new cinema entrance, local car parking, and the relocation of thirty-three car parking spaces within Golden Island Shopping Centre.

A 37-year-old Irishman has allegedly admitted to killing Ms Michalski accidentally after becoming intimate at a rented apartment. Ms Michalski ’s friend said she received texts from her and that she was at a bar in the Jewish run district having a drink and dinner. She detailed how she responded to a message from Ms Michalski at around 12.45 am on Tuesday. In a statement, her family thanked the efforts of everyone, including strangers abroad and officials across the world for getting involved in helping find Ms Michalski.

The family vote is seen as key to all parties campaigning in the general election, with commitments across the board to reduce the cost of childcare. Fine Gael will today announce plans to double the Child Benefit payment every August, meaning families will receive at least €280 per child. The party is also committing to reducing the cost of childcare to €200 a month per child with a €600 cap per family. The Labour Party insists it was the first to come forward with a proposal to cap childcare costs at €200 a month per child. The Social Democrats is committing to capping childcare costs at €250 per month.

New weather warning issued for thick fog across MidlandsFor the second night running, a weather warning for fog will be in place this evening (Tuesday) for much of the country, including the Midlands counties of Westmeath, Roscommon and Offaly. Met Éireann said the yellow-level warning will come into effect at 6pm today and will remain in place until 10am tomorrow, Wednesday, morning. The weather service said the widespread fog would lead to poor visibility and hazardous travelling conditions. The weather warning will be in effect for 23 of the 26 counties in the Republic of Ireland, with the exceptions being the North West counties of Mayo, Sligo and Donegal.

AstraZeneca said it is in China ‘for the long haul’ and outlined billions of pounds of investment in the US – but a new vaccine factory in the UK hangs in the balance. The pharma giant’s chief executive Pascal Soriot threw his weight behind its Chinese business yesterday. The commitment to China and the US came as AstraZeneca said it was locked in talks with ministers about whether it will go ahead to build a £450million vaccine factory in Liverpool. AstraZeneca also remained committed to China, where it is the country’s largest pharmaceutical firm employing around 18,000 staff. Last week AstraZeneca revealed that the head of its China business, Leon Wang, had been detained by authorities in the city of Shenzhen.

The General Election campaign has officially begun after Taoiseach Simon Harris asked President Michael D Higgins to dissolve the Dáil this afternoon. Mr Harris travelled to Áras an Uachtaráin to trigger what will be a relatively short three-week campaign ahead of polling day on Friday November 29. It will bring to an end the four-and-a-half-year lifespan of the Fine Gael, Fianna Fail and Green Party coalition government.

Offaly general election race underwayOffaly is gearing up for a short, sharp three-week general election campaign, following confirmation of the general election on Friday, November 29. The only TD from Offaly elected in the last Dáil set to contest this election is Independent Deputy Carol Nolan. Fianna Fáil is running current Offaly County Council Cathaoirleach Tony McCormack, and new county councillor Claire Murray. He was first elected to Offaly County Council in 2014. McDonnell was a former member of Edenderry Town Council for almost 30 years, and also sat on Offaly County Council from 2004-2009.
