The derelict site of the former O’Neill’s pub in the centre of Athlone as it looked in Autumn 2023. Council now to draw up its own plans for ‘eyesore’ town siteThere may be an end in sight to the long-running saga of the derelict O'Neill's site in the centre of Athlone with confirmation this week that Westmeath County Council is to design and seek planning permission for a retail/residential building on the keynote site. The council bought the site in recent years and subsequently advertised it for sale as a "unique development opportunity" in a high-profile location. While he added that the council remains committed to the “sale and redevelopment” of the site, he reminded members that he made it clear as far back as last February that if the site was not sold the council planned to develop it themselves. Ironically, the discussion on the future use of the O'Neill's site took place on the same day as the ribbon was cut on the official opening of the multi-million euro Athlone Town Centre Regeneration & Enhancement Project.

Minister Peter BurkeUS election rhetoric may not materialise into policy - BurkeMinister for Enterprise, Peter Burke, believes that the reelection of Donald Trump as President of the United States will not be as damaging for the Irish economy as some commentators are predicting. “A lot of the rhetoric we've heard during the US campaign, as we've seen in the past, doesn't always materialise into policy,” Burke said. “It will be interesting to see which of his viewpoints are translated into policy once his advisors and team are appointed. Acknowledging that "the multilateral system is under greater pressure than ever before", Minister Burke says "we must do our best to work through these challenges". But from my experience travelling in the US, it’s clear that businesses choose Ireland not just for our corporation tax rate, but for our talent pool.

Essentially, it is the number candidates need to reach, that guarantees they will not be overtaken. Once that is calculated, the counting of the votes begins, starting with the first preference votes. The surplus must be enough to elect the highest candidate or be enough to either bring the lowest candidate level or higher than the second lowest candidate. ExclusionHowever, if no one reaches the quota on that count, then the candidate with the lowest number of votes is excluded. From there, their votes are distributed according to the second preference votes, called the second count.

The Irish public face a “historic choice” in the general election between more of the same or the “live option” of a Sinn Féin-led government, Mary Lou McDonald has insisted. The Sinn Féin president said the 70-plus candidates being fielded by her party proved it was “serious about winning” and removing both Fine Gael and Fianna Fail from power. Ms McDonald was speaking to reporters as she launched her own electoral campaign in the Dublin Central constituency.
