Rowing Ireland chief executive Michelle Carpenter did not attend the session. Rowing Ireland board chair Barry McWilliams said Ms Carpenter was unwell and unable to attend. He stressed that withdrawal of funding was not a tool the organisation “wishes to weaponise”, describing the Rowing Ireland situation as “unusual and unique”. She said Sport Ireland had not sought expanded statutory powers, though it remained open to considering changes to its remit to include investigations. “I’m not buying the idea that Sport Ireland couldn’t intervene before 2024,” Mr Kelly said.

It was incredibly popular at the time for girls of my age to celebrate birthdays by going up to the ice rink in Dolphin’s Barn. I was something of a whizz on roller skates thanks to a 25-foot driveway with only a few potholes and the relatively isolated childhood of a rural tween. It was incredibly popular at the time for girls of my age to celebrate birthdays by going up to the ice rink in Dolphin’s Barn. Alas both the Dolphin’s Barn rink and Silver Skate in Phibsboro didn’t last into the new millennium, and with them went my dreams of gold. Among my many, many deranged pandemic lockdown purchases was a pair of adult roller skates.

Bang interiorBang interiorInteriors at BangWhat’s striking is how Iberian the menu is, and how little it relies on the obvious markers. We order the half piri piri chicken from Ring’s Farm (€24), from the “over fire” section. Treacle-dark skin, crisp with piri piri glaze, enrobes flesh that is juicy and full of flavour. This isn’t a nostalgic tapas exercise or a greatest-hits Iberian menu. Bang feels like a restaurant that has stopped trying to impress and started concentrating, which is when things get interesting.

“My opinion is that the EU used Ireland as a bit of a battering ram against the Brits,” he told journalist Pat McArt. Instead, the relationship between London and Dublin, painstakingly built up during the peace process, was destroyed – damage that is only now starting to heal. His observations on Brexit were all the more intriguing for being offered after McArt asked about a united Ireland. Bassett said a Jim O’Callaghan-led Fianna Fáil could change the conversation on a united Ireland. Helping the UK to make deals with Europe helps to reduce trading frictions in Northern Ireland, and vice versa.

As US president Donald Trump seeks to extend his stranglehold over the international system, the latest shot from his armoury of power plays is the proposal to create an international Board of Peace. Initially envisaged as a temporary body that would monitor the implementation of the Gaza ceasefire agreement, it has now been extended into a multidimensional plan for a new international organisation for peace. While the board declares the intention to preserve peace, and dependable and lawful governance, the similarities to the UN end there. The structure in fact takes the most divisive elements of the UN, especially the dysfunctional veto system, and centralises American power around them. This most recent power play read more like the articles of incorporation for a “Global Trump Inc” rather than the reasoned basis of an international organisation for peace.

Motorists drove into level crossing gates 23 times last year, Iarnród Éireann said. The Merrion Gates initiative marks the first use in more than a decade of automatic cameras to catch motorists breaking red lights. Speaking at the Merrion Gates on Wednesday, Assistant Garda Commissioner for roads policing, Catharina Gunne, said the use of red-light cameras was an important deterrent. “Now that this has been proved [at the Merrion Gates] it should be easier to get the rest of them in,” he said.

Aussie tennis legend Pat Rafter has slammed a number of current stars who feel a lack of privacy at the Australian Open makes them feel like they are 'animals in the zoo'. Gauff then raged at Australian Open organisers after vision of her meltdown became a huge talking point. 'I tried to go somewhere where I thought there wasn't a camera, because I don't like breaking racquets. When co-host Clint Stanaway said 'players also make money out of the broadcast', Rafter replied, 'Exactly.' 'Also, can there be a unisex place for people to have a private conversation and/or break something?'

"It's not the Blarney Stone," Edwards quips, "so you don't have to kiss it, talk to it, or lick it." Instead, we'll wrap our lips around craft beers "scientifically proven to cure nothing, not even the hangover" before clattering downstairs to Blake's culinary centrepiece. Flavour has become folklore in the vaulted cellar (called 28 at the Hollow) pungent with the scent of smoked aubergine and wild Atlantic cod but Edwards has just mentioned the sleek vessel that's "a bit like a floating living room" awaiting passengers at the Erne Water Taxi departure point down on Broadmeadow. I'm intrigued.
