Technicians at Tekeir, a consumer electronics company partnered with refurbedAs well as doing your bit for reducing environmental pollution, by opting for a second-hand device, there are also cost benefits in getting ‘old’ phones out of the junk drawer at home. Some of those chunky old pre-smartphone devices “were built to last”, Mr Power says, and may still be useful for spare parts if you take them to a shop such as CEX, which has more than 35 outlets across the country. Barclays Bank is certainly making life difficult for many customers as it continues to take an axe to its branches. Barclays shut its branch in Ilkley two years ago although in its defence it hasn't been the only bank to desert the town. Or in extremis, he will bank the occasional cheque he receives at a Barclays branch when he is down in London on business. Bank branch closures, I fear, will be a recurring theme this year. It's not quite all doom and gloom on the bank branch front.

The end of two pointless referendums draws near, but there’s still enough time left for people to embarrass themselves; and the arguments against marriage are poisonous. https://www.irishtimes.com/life-style/people/2024/03/02/brianna-parkins-fairy-tales-about-marriage-are-a-way-for-rich-people-to-feel-as-if-they-deserve-their-charmed-lives/Photo credit: Stock Holm / Shutterstock

The campaigns, particularly by those advocating a Yes vote to both questions, have been distinctly underwhelming. Photo: Getty ImagesIrish citizens will be asked to vote on Friday in two referendums to change our Constitution. When a government proposes constitutional change, the minimum to be expected is that it properly explains why such change is necessary in the first place, and then robustly makes the case for it. The family founded on marriage means the unit based on a marriage between two people without distinction as to their sex. In either referendum, if citizens vote No, there will be no relevant change to the Constitution.

Weekly earnings in the arts, entertainment, recreation and other service activities sector are below the national average of €921.81. Struggling artists and arts workers who caught a glimpse of this week’s headlines noting that the biggest rise in earnings here in the fourth quarter of 2023 could be found in the arts sector might be a little confused by this apparent good news. Sadly, but not surprisingly, the “arts sector” is doing a lot of heavy lifting here, with the full title of the category stretching to “arts, entertainment, recreation and other service activities”. Workers in this broader “R-S” sector saw their average weekly earnings rise 9.8 per cent from €590.81 to €649 in the fourth quarter, according to preliminary estimates from the Central Statistics Office (CSO). The bad news is that weekly earnings for the “R-S” economic sector are a long way behind the €921.81 national average, with only accommodation and food services – a sector notoriously battling to retain staff – paying less.

Some 80 per cent of revenue pertains to hardware, but Apple “trades on a software multiple”. READ MOREMeanwhile, Apple’s 2024 earnings estimates have risen slightly over the past year – much more slowly than all but one (Tesla) of the other members of the so-called magnificent seven group of tech stocks.
