Liberia: NEC to Declare Samukai’s Victory in Lofa Void
Of the 11 candidates who vied for the December 8, 2020 Special Senatorial elections, Samukai received 20,431 votes, followed by Independent candidate Cllr. But the former defense minister has experienced mixed rulings with the Supreme Court since he won the senatorial seat in Lofa. The Supreme Court ruled in favor of Samukai and mandated to the NEC to proceed with the matter. The delay in certificating Samukai has caused stir in Lofa County since his election victory. Making Lofa a sovereign stateAnd ahead of the NEC reported declaration of a by-election in the county, residents have threatened to make Lofa County a sovereign state by breaking away from Liberia.

The Liberia Renaissance Office Incorporated to Begin Community Outreach and Support the Opposition Bloc
Monrovia – The Liberia Renaissance Office Incorporated (LIROI), the newest pressure group that is said to have been lobbying in the US for the opposition bloc has vowed to work with the opposition Collaborating Political Party (CPP) to unseat President at the polls in 2023. Their support for the CPP comes after FrontPage Africa reported that a US$180,000 lobbying and public relations campaign aiming to gain US support for the opposition in Liberia was registered under the banner of the Liberian Renaissance Office. In a release signed by the George Gyude Wisner, Coordinator of the Liberia Office calls on Liberians in and outside Liberia to usher in a “new era” in Liberia by promoting democracy, economic transformation and sustainable development in the Country. The LIROI also congratulates the Alternative National Congress on the successful holding of its extra-ordinary Convention. It is important that all constituent parties of the CPP uphold the tenets of democracy,” the release stated.

Liberia: Liberty Party Leadership Buries the Hatchet; Agree to Work Together Respecting Each Other’s Role
MONROVIA – Officials of opposition Liberty Party has reached an agreement internally to put aside their differences and work for the common goal of the party. This lead to a prompt response from the party’s political leader, Senator Nyonblee Karngar Lawrence, who termed the purported suspension of the party’s top officials as bogus. Going forward the political leader and national chairman shall consult and collaborate on all decisions, and there should be no unilateral decisions by anybody. The officials agreed that no executive member should speak publicly on the ongoing issue or any party operations unless specifically authorized to. They also called for more frequent engagements between the political leader and the National Executive Council (NEC).

Alleged Ritualistic Killings in Liberia: False Alarms Or Poor Investigative Skills?
Parts are extracted from the remains of the victims by the unknown perpetrators for ritualistic purposes. It has also raised questions and doubts over the ability of state security actions to provide security to Liberians and other foreign residents. Police Inspector General Patrick Sudue recently informed the public that the information provided to the police by Solomon was false and misleading. Phone records which were subpoenaed by the police show that the alleged victim never left Montserrado County all during his alleged kidnapping tale. According to the records quoted by the IG, Solomon was in Clara Town, Vai Town, New Kru Town, among other places, throughout during his alleged ordeal.

Gbarpolu County has therefore become tense due to the increasing conflict between men working for Senator Botoe Kanneh and FDA rangers, members of the WCTF. These activities are critical in places such as Gbarpolu County where FDA and partners have seen a heavy decline in multiple wildlife species’ populations. Gbarpolu is known as a center for intensive illegal hunting of protected species, reportedly backed by Senator Kanneh. Rights and Rice Foundation Launches Natural Resources Project to Strengthen Concession affected Communities
The project seeks to support these affected communities receive an equitable benefit sharing from natural resources revenues through training and advocacy. However, such investments have the mean to undermine local community customary rights to land, natural resources, and the locals’ ways of life if not managed well. Such trends are exacerbated by government and concessions lack the effective will in recognizing and implementing a range of people’s and local communities’ rights laws standard that promote equitable and sustainable management of land, environment and natural resources management. Additionally, he stated that this will build their capacities in various national and international instruments that protect community rights to land and natural resources as well as sustainable natural management. Additionally, he noted that project will support communities through training and logistics to track income from natural resources extraction by collaborating with partners such as Liberia Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative (LEITI) and support community members’ representation at county settings.

The vice chairman for press and public affairs, Daniel Sando, was also suspended for six months for same reasons. Both NEC members have been suspended for a period of six months beginning October 1, 2021 and ends on March 31, 2020,” the Liberty Party stated in a press release. Senator Dillon on August 24 during an interview on SKY TV alleged that Liberty Chairman, Musa H. Bility had altered the constitution of the Liberty Party. He further asserted that Chairman Bility is a “crook” and that he is “all about the money”. Another meeting was scheduled for September 10 but they still ignored the invitation, according to the Claims, Petition and Investigation Committee.

MONROVIA – The Liberia National Police has arrested a stalwart of the Alternative National Congress (ANC), Jethro Saylah Kangar Harris, for allegedly spreading misinformation of ritualistic killing on Facebook. FrontPageAfrica gathered that Kangar had reportedly posted a picture of a young girl alongside a picture of an open corpse on an autopsy table. FrontPageAfrica cannot publish the photos allegedly published on Facebook by Kangar because of its graphic content. Karnga was arrested in Ganta, Nimba County while on a tour with the ANC’s standard bearer, Alexander B. Cummings. Yorgbor also said the ANC is baffled by the arrest since their stalwart didn’t directly accuse anyone in the post.

But appearing on State radio on Wednesday, September 29, 2021, Police Inspector General Patrick Sudue disclosed that Mr. Beyan provided false information to the public. Further actions shall be determined by the Executive Members of the OC upon the conclusion of the LNP’s investigation”. The party maintains that this act in no way, shape or form has anything to do with the PLP whatsoever. Meanwhile, the PLP further welcomes the move made by the LNP to charge Mr. Beyan for being in illegal possession of a firearm and providing false information to law enforcement officers.

Liberia: COVID-19 Vaccination on a Slow Pace in Lofa County
An additional 1,000 of the second doses of AstraZeneca arrived in Lofa a fortnight ago, county’s health promotion focal person at the level of the County Health Team, William Sherman, told newsmen recently in Voinjama. “Health authorities in the county are designing a risk communication strategy to facilitate its localized roll-out of the J&J vaccines across the county. “We should have launched it last week Friday, but we had some constraints and we are also concluding the development of our risk communication strategy,” Sherman said. Though some residents expressed frustration over the slow pace of the vaccination process in the county, they are willing to take the jabs when the health team finally begins the process. The population in Lofa has begun to understand that the vaccines will help boost their immune system against COVID-19.

The dialogue, Wilson says, will focus on key recommendations that will center around the implementation of existing policies and strategies that center on access to justice, peace, and security. Joseph Chessman commended the leadership of the Youth Crime Watch of Liberia for what he terms as their farsightedness in elevating an important issue of the youths and access to justice to the national stage. This is why enhancing access to justice for the largest segment of our population –the youth is important.”
