‘Bad Man Roberts’ was killed in a brutal ex-change of fire with the police leaving a senior officer of the LNP anti-robbery unit, Chief. MONROVIA — The National Benefit Sharing Trust Board (NBSTB) said the Government of Liberia owes forest affected communities more than US$3 million in land rental fees accrued through commercial logging activities. The 12-months project seeks to build the capacity of the NBST to effectively monitor and evaluate projects awarded to forest affected communities. The project aims to improve forest governance, through the provision of technical assistance, building the capacity of forest committees to undertake necessary projects in eligible forest affected countries. “We convened the National Forest Forum to discuss how we can manage money that should come to our institution to develop forest affected communities. We are doing this by working harder with the Union of communities’ forest development committees,” she added.

MONROVIA — The United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has conducted a Baseline Survey and Knowledge Gap Assessment of the United Nations Security Council Resolutions on Women Peace and Security in Liberia. On Friday, March 12, 2021, a Validation Workshop on the findings of the Baseline Survey and Knowledge Gap Assessment was held in Monrovia. The Baseline Survey and Knowledge Gap Assessment were carried out under a project entitled: Advancing Implementation of the UNSCR 1325 on Women, Peace and Security through Strengthening Accountability Frameworks, Innovation Financing and Gender Responsive Budgeting. The knowledge gap assessment was conducted on Gender, Masculinity, Human Rights Standards, Human rights-based approach and the National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security. The knowledge gap assessment will guide the planning of project activities and the integration of a rights-based approach in all project activities.

Monrovia — The Liberia Statistics and Geo-Information Services (LISGIS) and the State-run University of Liberia (UL) on Thursday, March 11, launched for the first time in Liberia a Bachelor of Science Degree in Statistics at the University of Liberia. The Statistical program at the University of Liberia is supported by the World Bank under the Harmonizing and Improving Statistics in West Africa Project (HISWA). Speaking at the UL’s Auditorium, LISGIS Director-General Prof. Francis Wreh lauded the University of Liberia for the partnership to establish for the first time an undergraduate degree in Statistics. He added that for this reason, the University of Liberia, which is a state-owned university, has been identified to spearhead the component. LISGIS DG said there has been the quest for a degree in Statistics since the establishment of the University of Liberia, first as Liberia College in 1862 and then as a full-fledged University in the 1950s.

Capitol Hill, Monrovia – A group of university students under the banner Conscious Students of Grand Kru County has honored Deputy House Speaker, J. Fonati Koffa in recognition of his numerous development initiatives since he became Representative of the county’s second electoral district. Recently, Rep. Koffa donated a 33KVA generator to Buah-Taybu, Hilllux Toyota pickup to Grand Kru County’s chapter of the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) and completed the first-ever elementary school in Chengbetee. The student group, comprises over 100 members from various colleges and universities in Monrovia and hailing from Grand Kru County. In recognition of the achievements, the students “gowned” the Deputy Speaker and presented an ‘artistic portrait’ of him. Speaking recently at the One United Nations House, Kofi Annan Conference Room in Monrovia, Minister Kemayah informed participants at the Liberia Configuration of the United Nations Peacebuilding Commission that women empowerment in Liberia is reflected at every level of society. The Liberian Foreign Minister made these remarks at the virtual ambassadorial-level meeting of Liberia Configuration of the United Nations Peacebuilding Commission, along with international partners with focus on promoting women’s empowerment and gender equality in Liberia. “They forced warring parties and other stakeholders to negotiate and broker a peace deal referred to as the Accra Comprehensive Peace Agreement,” Minister Kemayah reflected. Williametta E. Saydee-Tarr, Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection; Madam Marie Goreth Nizigama, UN Women Liberia Country Director; and German Ambassador Hubert Jäger, among others.
