MONROVIA – Liberian businessman and politician, Simeon Freeman, is undoubtedly one of the most formidable entrepreneurs for the year 2020; he is recognized as the best businessman of 2020 in Liberia. Simeon Freeman who runs the Consolidated Group Incorporated (CGI), service provider of DSTV in Liberia started his business venture in 1990 from scratch. Freeman in 2020 has revamped his Vist Water Company from 5,000 bottles to 30,000 bottles. From the onset of his business, Mr. Freeman was involved into live cow business where he used to go to import cows from Guinea to Liberia. Freeman so far has employed more than 500 direct employees at his DSTV and rock quarry company including the water producing factory.

Speaking to FrontPageAfrica about the incident, Mr. Garmondeh Karnga said he and his sister had received several threats from individuals loyal to Findley due to their political differences. According to Mr. Karnga, he had left his house to find two persons to sleep in their father’s house since the boys who live in it had all travelled to Monrovia. While Logan and Smith could also not be reached, Mr. Greaves described the fire incident as unfortunate and said he is in sympathy with Mr. Karnga. However, Mr. Greaves said it is surprising that Mr. Karnga would accuse him of masterminding the fire incident as he (Greaves) has been in Monrovia working. It is a sad situation but he shouldn’t make such an allegation against me without any evidence,” said Greaves.

Monrovia – APM Terminals has announced a 9.67 percent increment on all current charges of its services at the Free Port of Monrovia. According to the company, since the conception of its concession agreement between wit the government of Liberia, it has consistently complied with the terms mandated in the concession agreement. We appreciate your partnership and look forward to even more positive engagements this year,” APM Terminals stated in its advisory. However, APM Terminals informed FrontPageAfrica that it is planning to invest in improving its operations and equipment with over US$3.3 million in 2021. APM Terminals in 2010 signed a 25‐year concession agreement for the operation of the Free Port of Monrovia.

Liberia’s Court System Needs to Adopt the New Normal
In more advanced societies, the infrastructure for virtual court sittings came in handy to keep the judicial process going but sadly, our story is the direct opposite. In the Liberian Judiciary, the use of technology is rarely an option in the Court system, filing before the court is as ancient as the origin of the Common Law Practice. The use of technology will help eliminate barriers that could change public perception that the legal system is burdensome and time consuming. International organizations with interest in improving the legal system might step in, all that is required is the readiness to catch up with realities of today’s world. Once there is a desire to improve the Court system, funding sources can be solicited to unclog the wheel of progress towards a virtual court system.

Liberia: CSOs in Education Develops Policy Brief on Early Childhood Improvement and the Learning Outcome in the TVET Sector
The event brought together 22 national civil society organizations like (NTAL, UMOVEMEN, and YOCEL, Educate the Future, KEEP and the Education NGO Forum amongst others). Participants at the dialogue highlighted key policies gaps that could informed the development of the policy brief ranging from the Education Reform Act of 2011, The Girls Education Act, The TVET Policy and they also outline the lapses within the Liberia Education Advancement Program (LEAP). With direct focus on learning outcomes, impact of TVET with new innovations and the enrollment and completion of girls in the TVET programs. With these consensus and to validate stakeholders stands on the TVET sector they highlighted the United Nations Industrial Organization Report of 2016 which revealed that Women and Girls are under-represented in nearly all levels of education, including junior high, senior high, most especially Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions in Liberia. In addition, the report also mentioned equity challenges facing the education sector in Liberia and intimated that most training programs are concentrated in urban areas, particularly Monrovia and the report also similarly highlighted three main areas within the TVET sector that need urgent attention Access, Quality, Participation and Learning Outcomes by Gender.

Armed Forces of Liberia Patrols Liberia’s Borders; Joins Forces with Neighboring Countries to Ensure Border Safety
MONROVIA – The Armed Forces of Liberia is continuing its patrol along the Liberian borders with Guinea, Ivory Coast, and Sierra Leone as part of its statutory mandate in protecting the territorial limit of the country. The patrols are being greeted with high enthusiasm from locals living along these borderlines, as they continue to express overwhelming confidence in the Liberian military. The AFL enjoys excellent relationships with the military of Guinea, Ivory Coast, and Sierra Leone, which are all members states of the Mano River Union (MRU). Patrols are continuing in border towns in Nimba County to include Kamplay, Logatuo, and Butuo among others. During the patrols, our troops interacted with kids by sharing gifts (sweets) with them.

Former Center for Disease Control Boss Hails Liberia for COVID-19 Prevention
Monrovia – In his January 1, 2021 publication in the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), Tom Frieden, former DIRECTOR OF THE CENTER FOR DISEASE CONTROL (CDC) hailed Liberia as one of the top countries in fighting the deadly Coronavirus. “Liberia, hard hit by the Ebola epidemic in 2014, was one of first countries to start screening for COVID-19 at Airports and to adopt other control measures, such as rapid testing, Complete contact tracing and quarantine” CDC’s Director emeritus asserted. With scars of Ebola still on the County’s Economy and Health sector, the government of Liberia under President George Manneh Weah took no chances with the Wuhan virus. In fact, Liberia came out as one of the only countries in the world with a projected growth in its GDP in 2021 by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). There were worthy returns to the government’s efforts and today Liberia is safer from COVID than many countries around the Globe.

AFTER A CHALLENGING 2020, it appears that many are withholding suggestions for New Year’s resolution for 2021. IN 2021, WE expect to see technocrats in government talking less politics and focusing the technical aspects of running the government. Business as usual should have no space in 2021. IN 2021, WE expect to see a robust legislature that would be willing to painstakingly scrutinize bills and agreements that come before them. IN 2021, WE expect to see more improvements in health care delivery and improvements of facilities at major health centers.

Liberia: Family of A Man Allegedly Linked to Same-Sex Alarms over Threat on His Life
The family fear follows a live video broadcast on social media, where the anti-same-sex organization, “Citizens Movement Against Gay Practices” directly linked Mr. Alvin Gould to “forceful inducement’ of some youth, mainly young men, into gay practices. He believes as an advocate against gay practice in Liberia, such an alleged act must be resisted and that Mr. Gould must desist from allegedly attempting to induce young people with money. Konway said, in a time where advocacy for and against gay practices is still an issue of discussion, “no one should force young Liberians to get involved into gay practices,” by taking advantage of their ‘underprivileged’ conditions. He wants Liberians and other against the act to resist Mr. Gould, the man allegedly at the center of such discourse by paying no attention to his messages. “Our intelligence has hinted us that Mr. Gould is also in connection with other institutions worldwide, involved with the promotion of such act in Liberia,” he alleged.
