Kokoyah District, Bong County – About 250 Liberians working at the Turkish mining MNG Gold in Kokoyah Statutory District in Bong County have been laid off, the union representing the workers confirmed Tuesday to FrontPage Africa. “Yes, it’s true,” said Anthony Samman, president of the United Workers Union in Bong County, adding that layoff notices were handed to workers last week. In resistance to the State’s submission, the defendants waived their rights to jury trial and requested for a bench trial. Meaning that the judge of the court will served as both judge and jury ( Jury De Facto) in the trial of the case. In his ruling, Judge Yamie Quiqui Gbeisay denied the State application for jury trial and granted the defendants a bench trial. In response, the defendants (Weeks, Badio, Tamba and Farhai) interposes no objection to the prosecution’s submission. However, Judge Gbeisay also granted the prosecution request for the separate trial of defendant Melissa A. Emeh.

Monrovia – The President’s Young Professional Program (PYPP), supported by USAID-Liberia and the government of Liberia through the Civil Service Agency (CSA), Monday celebrated its first Inaugural Private Sector placement. Ltd offices outside Monrovia, the PYPP turned over three of its newest young professionals to Conex, for a two-year fellowship mentorship and training. Said Zaizay: “These 3 Young Professionals are expected to be mentored, trained and provided professional and leadership development support by CONEX over a period of two years. “These young professionals were placed in more than 25 Government ministries and agencies driving institutional strengthening and effective service delivery at the same time supporting the government to achieve its development agenda,” explained Zaizay. The three young professional placed at Conex are a part of the newly recruited cohort of 23 young and talented Liberian college graduates to form part of the PYPP 9th Class.

The setting up of reading spaces is one of the primary goals of the USAID Read Liberia Activity, an early grade reading initiative that targets over 50,000 students in approximately 640 schools in six counties in Liberia. Read Liberia’s social community mobilizers engage parents and communities to increase early grade school enrollment, promote reading at home, develop reading spaces in the Activity’s targeted counties. The Read Liberia program, Dunnor said, motivated her to get involved in the Parent Teachers Association. “I like Read Liberia program because they gave my children books that they bring home to read,’’ Dunnor said. MONROVIA – The Embassy of Sweden and the United Nations Population Fund signed an agreement for Sweden’s contribution of forty-three million Swedish Krona (SEK 43,000), approximately US$4.9 million to support UNFPA Country Programme document for Liberia over the next four and half years. “UNFPA is a strategic partner to Sweden, with the capacity to achieve relevant results significant to the needs and conditions of women and girls in Liberia, especially the poorest women and girls in rural communities,” H. Monrovia – The head of the West African Examination Council (WAEC) Liberia Chapter, Dale G. Gbotoe has alleged that some school administrators have “deliberate intentions” to defraud this year’s West African Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) process. “One of those who were caught is a school administrator hired by WAEC to serve as supervisor for this year’s examination,” Mr. Gbotoe disclosed. Meanwhile, the WAEC boss disclosed that the number of students participating in this year’s examination is more encouraging than previous years. At the same time, Mr. Gbotoe has blamed the situation on the inability of some school administrators to do their work on their respective campus. Nevertheless, he commended other schools for better coordinating their students but warned school administrators not to exploit the situation that has seen students taking the examination on their various campuses this year.
