After rigorous reviews by the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning and development partners, the budget was reduced by US$ 5.2m or 23.%. “In my little experience, I do not believe we can achieve all that we should be doing by now effectively in keeping with transparency that should characterize the Special Senatorial Election in October of this year.

Rape is an atrocious and heinous crime, which MUST be fought against by every social institution, government and its parastatals. Thus, they – moral and civil disciplines – are pivotal ingredients to combat all forms of deviation such as rape and other forms of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV). Liberia’ schools need to redirect themselves in teaching mores, standards and decency from deeply theoretical, historical and metaphysical ways to more practical and realist manners. Further, academia and academics also need to deconfine themselves from a traditional role of the sector; transmitting and conveying knowledge to the pupils. Hence, putting stringent measures in place to address and reduce alarming rape cases and other forms of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) have to be among the main objectives, which they strive to achieve.

FOHRD Executive Director Tee WonokayThere have been countless reports, both internationally and locally, of the very inhumane conditions of several prison facilities across Liberia. These conditions range from over crowdedness and lack of sanitary supplies to filthy and unsafe ventilations, etc. Tee WonokayIn this moment, there are at least sixteen major prison facilities in the country including one detention center, these facilities are currently holding about three thousand inmates. And clearly, Liberia’s prison population continues to grow exponentially every few months with little or no improvement in the quality and size of its prison centers. But at the Foundation for Human Rights Defense, we are skeptical of the Bureau’s claim of innocence, it is infact likely that the conditions of those deceased inmates were exacerbated by inadequate care and other poor conditions at the facility.

The three day training was designed to transmit best practice modules from a specially designed story based investigative reporting manual. Journalists learnt introduction to investigative reporting, forming the hypothesis, investigative reporting style and structure, data driven reporting using the FOI law, among other things. Clear distinction was made between the normal journalistic practice that sticks to reporting events as opposed to the process oriented story based investigative reporting. The facilitators CEMESP Program Officer Albert Baron Ansu and Publisher of the Public Trust Media Frank Sainworla stressed the point that investigative reporting requires research, depth and fraught with risk factors. They have been reminded that there is immense goodwill from donors that are eager to instill transparency and accountability based on fact based reporting anchored on ethics rather than subterfuge.
