MONROVIA – The Embassy of Sweden and the United Nations Population Fund signed an agreement for Sweden’s contribution of forty-three million Swedish Krona (SEK 43,000), approximately US$4.9 million to support UNFPA Country Programme document for Liberia over the next four and half years. “UNFPA is a strategic partner to Sweden, with the capacity to achieve relevant results significant to the needs and conditions of women and girls in Liberia, especially the poorest women and girls in rural communities,” H. E. Ingrid Wetterqvist, Swedish Ambassador to Liberia said during the signing ceremony. “We are of the utmost conviction that the programme will contribute to the realization of specific human rights including the right to life and the right to health. “Access to quality sexual and reproductive health services and reproductive rights by all; especially women and girls is the core of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals” says UNFPA Liberia Representative, Dr. Bannet Ndyanabangi. Liberia: COVID-19 Food Distribution So Far Carried out in Only Two Districts in Montserrado CountyIREDD monitored Twenty (20) distribution sites within two districts (district 7 & 8) in Montserrado County from July 29 to August 12, 2020. The food package, as proposed, consists of each qualified household receiving two 25 kg bags of rice, one gallon of vegetable oil and a 10kg of beans to help sustain the family during the pandemic. “The distribution team on ground are finding it very difficult to enforce COVID-19 health measures at all distribution sites as many are not following health guidelines (hand washing, nose mask, social distancing). Over-crowdedness is also a major challenge to security personnel and the food distribution team,” IREDD said in its report. “IREDD monitored Twenty (20) distribution sites within two districts (district 7 & 8) in Montserrado County from July 29 to August 12, 2020.

Monrovia – The head of the West African Examination Council (WAEC) Liberia Chapter, Dale G. Gbotoe has alleged that some school administrators have “deliberate intentions” to defraud this year’s West African Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) process. “One of those who were caught is a school administrator hired by WAEC to serve as supervisor for this year’s examination,” Mr. Gbotoe disclosed. Meanwhile, the WAEC boss disclosed that the number of students participating in this year’s examination is more encouraging than previous years. At the same time, Mr. Gbotoe has blamed the situation on the inability of some school administrators to do their work on their respective campus. Nevertheless, he commended other schools for better coordinating their students but warned school administrators not to exploit the situation that has seen students taking the examination on their various campuses this year.

Waka Town – A development team returning from the dedication of President George Manneh Weah’s housing project in Grand Kru County, was involved in a fatal accident in Waka Town, near Buchanan, Grand Bassa County. The housing project which is said to be in its final stage, is aimed at providing shelter for less-fortunate residents in the President’s hometown. The project strategically located in the Jrao statutory district housing units with two bedrooms, a living room, bathroom and two porches. Engineers have broken down thatched houses marked for replacement by LACE to allow only beneficiary of Sasstown, Grand Kru County, to benefit from the Presidential Pro Poor Housing Units. Norkwia, Sloyee and Wessah towns are the only towns in Sasstown, which are not included.

Monrovia – The Management of Golden Veroleum (Liberia) Inc. (GVL) says it is currently rationalizing its workforce and implementing a redundancy exercise affecting 250 employees due to the numerous economic challenges the Company has been facing over the years and prolonged global economic downturn exacerbated by the coronavirus pandemic. The statement further said, “the reduction of its workforce that is in full consultation with the affected workers, the workers’ union and the Ministry of Labor becomes necessary to sustain its business in Liberia. However, it has not been able to expanding the past four years, while continuing to pay salaries for non-deployed employees. GVL affirmed that when the Company’s financial and economic status improves in future, employees who are affected by this redundancy may be prioritized for re-employment, taking into account skill, capability and productivity requirements. The Management of Golden Veroleum (Liberia) Inc. says keeping the company operating will enable it to continue to contribute to the Liberian economy through government taxes, salaries and local purchases.

“Survivors Spotlight” is a one-hour radio and online program that aims to air the stories of COVID-19 survivors in order to raise awareness, erase fear and stigmatizationMonrovia – A grant support from the United States Embassy near Monrovia is helping to spotlight Covid-19 survivors’ stories, which are being aired in a one-hour radio and online program. The launch brought together prominent entities and individuals including the US Embassy in Monrovia, Ministry of Health (MOH)/National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL), Centers for Disease Control (CDC)-Liberia, ECOWAS, USAID-Liberia, YALI RLC Alumni – Liberia, and several COVID-19 survivors. Kormassa G. Vankpanah, who are COVID-19 survivors, applauded Survivors’ Spotlight team for the opportunity afforded them to share their stories which they believe will eradicate fear, denials, and encourage anyone contracting the virus to seek early treatment. Meanwhile, the first edition of Survivors’ Spotlight was held on Saturday, August 15, with two survivors — Mr. Jackson David and Miss Kormassa G. Vankpanah. Unlike many others, he reported himself at the 14 Military Hospital, which is now being used as the Covid-19 Treatment Center.
