Paynesville – Thirty-three-year old Winston Holmes is currently being detained at the Zone 9 Depot in Jacob Town, Paynesville for allegedly raping a 15-year-old girl in the Neezoe Community. Police Spokesman Moses Carter confirmed the information to FrontPageAfrica Wednesday, July 8 but said investigation was ongoing. While the girl was at the house, a community source said, the alleged perpetrator instructed other children who went along with her to buy candies at a nearby shop. Monrovia – The Women Wing of the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) is recommending to its Governing Council to include more women so as to promote inclusiveness. Representing the Women Wing of the CDC, the Co-Chair of the CDC Women Wing and Chair of the National Patriotic Party Women’ Wing, Madame Mary Q. Johnson stressed that her party needs to do more in promoting female participation in politics. “Because now if you look at the Legislature and even in local government, the women of Liberia are not really seen. This paper aimed at pointing out the loophole of the education system in Liberia with suggested way forward. Nevertheless, according to the Liberia Education Sector Analysis 2016, 47.3% of the population has no education which is above the regional average of 34%. Unfortunately, developing and undeveloped countries are the ones affected mostly due to the limited education facilities and poor education system. This must be a serious concern for institutions and families of Liberia, education must not be halted because it is essential for growth and development. More than 80% of public schools are under-resourced in Liberia, with rural areas totally neglected or less prioritized by the system (Education and Fragility in Liberia; IIEP research papers; 2011).

Monrovia – The Environmental Protection Agency of Liberia (EPA) in collaboration with Conservation International (CI) has ended an eight-hour virtual workshop on Liberia’s National Greenhouse Gas (GHG) and the Measurement, Reporting and Verification system (MRV) amidst the ongoing Corona Virus (COVID-19) pandemic in the country. The well-organized virtual workshop also received technical support from AETHER for which the agency appreciates their support. AETHER is an international organization that is at the forefront of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) and air quality emissions calculation and review, in international, national and local authority markets. This categorization was is in line with the international reporting provided by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). At the end of the training, participants expressed appreciation to the organizers for the training workshop that was facilitated by several environmentalists from Government line Ministries and Agencies as well as other international working groups, and thematic mentors from Aether.

MONROVIA – The trial of Alieu Kosiah, former United Liberation Movement of Liberia for Democracy (ULIMO) commander, has again been postponed by the Swiss Federal Criminal Court. The trial was initially scheduled to take place in April 2020, in Bellinzona, Switzerland. However, in March 2020, it was postponed by the Court due to the measures imposed by the Swiss authorities in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. At the time, the Court aimed at rescheduling the trial between June and July 2020. Civitas Maxima and the Global Justice and Research Project (GJRP) understand that the postponement decision was taken by the Federal Criminal Court to allow for such a historic trial to take place in the best and safest circumstances possible.

On the other hand there is not a single record of a vacancy in the Legislature caused by resignation and expulsion. Nothing can be seen nor read in Article 37. Can we also say that article 2 of our constitution can be used as a reliance to challenge the word otherwise used in Article 37 whose dictionary meaning has been misunderstood and misapplied by those ambitious legislators? Let us create and adhere to the causes before election not after election. Has the Executive seen what the Legislature is doing to article 37 or has the Legislature seen what the Executive is also doing to Article 37?

Monrovia – The Government of Liberia will shortly disburse the amount of U.S.$3.1 million as part of Social Development Fund’s contribution to three counties. The counties to benefit are Nimba, Grand Bassa and Bong. Of the allocated amount, Nimba county will receive U.S $1.55 million, Grand Bassa U.S.$1.02 million, while Bong receives US$527,000, representing their respective SDF shares of 50 percent, 33.3 percent and 16.7 percent. Nimba county is expected to use the funds to repair its yellow machines for massive road works, while Grand Bassa and Bong will invest in a wide variety of important projects. Recently, President Weah visited a bridge under construction in the Smell No Taste area in Margibi County, which is being funded by the SDF given to Margibi county during the last budget year.
