Mr. A. Ndubisi Nwabudike is to be denied confirmation as Chairman of the National Elections Commission (NEC) by the Senate Committee on Autonomous Agency, it might not be because he is a naturalized Liberian citizen, rather because of the many inconsistencies and misinformation he provided the Committee about himself. During the second day of Senate confirmation hearings, the Senate was able to uncover several discrepancies and inconsistencies in the Cllr. The Senate uncovered that the NEC chair-designate had conflicting dates of birth. He also failed to provide his original naturalization certificate after was he told to bring it during his first appearance. His fate is yet to be decided by the Committee but he has been discharged from further hearings.

Having said that Mr. President, my issue has to do with the advisability or otherwise of the Cllr’s nomination for this particular post. Moreover, it is my understanding that on the books presently is a law to go to referendum that would permit dual citizenship but for natural born Liberians. It is with these exposures of insecurity to our nation that I make this appeal to you Mr. President to withdraw the nomination. will have to supervise a referendum on dual citizenship in which he has direct interest and therefore issues of impartiality can be expected to arise. As I close, may I draw your attention to the editorial of the Daily Observer of 26 March 2020entittled “Look Before You Leap, Mr. President”, in which it basically urges you Mr. President to learn from the lessons of History.

The political parties present at the hearing were Liberty Party (LP), Alternative National Congress, (ANC), the Unity Party (UP) and the True Whig Party. We ask that Mr. Floyd Sayon be rejected by this Committee to head the data center of the National Elections Commission (NEC). “Political parties should be made to channel their grievances through the office of the chairman of the committee. MONROVIA – The United States government is dishing out an initial aid of US$274 million to lead the world’s fight against the novel coronavirus. At least 14 African countries and European countries are benefitting but America’s oldest African ally and its neighbor, Sierra Leone were left out. The country partially shutdown with the discovery of the third case – a move that is now hard-hitting the already struggling economy. But the U.S. did not consider Liberia in its humanitarian and health assistance response to the COVID-19 pandemic. U.S. government agencies are working together to prioritize foreign assistance based on coordination and the potential for impact.

This includes access to family planning services & commodities, access to Basis Emergency obstetric care (Bmoc) and Emergency obstetric care (Emoc), Antenatal & Post-natal services, labor & delivery, routine immunization services and services for TB, HIV and Malaria. That risk communication and community engagement is robust and efficient to counter rumors and misinformation surrounding COVID-19 response in Liberia. That response mechanism for COVID-19 is gender-responsive considering that women are the first line of care for sick family members. That mental health and psychosocial support should be provided for frontline health workers, affected families, those in care and survivors of COVID-19.

Interestingly, a much higher resonance of public controversy is being reserved for the nominated chair. I faithfully submit no such considerations are motivating my concerns about the naturalized citizenship of the nominated chair. Mr. President Pro-Tempore and Honorable Senators, the nominated chair is not just an exclusive subject of Liberian citizenship and our laws by reason of his naturalization. It is publicly documented that approximately three months ago, the Liberian Senate confirmed the nominated chair to head the important Anti-Corruption Commission, tenured for at least 5 years. Please accept, Honorable President Pro-Tempore and Distinguished Members of the Honorable Liberian Senate, the assurances of my highest esteem.
