UN envoy to Libya, Abdoulaye Bathily, on Sunday reiterated his call on Libyan leaders to engage in dialogue for holding elections. “I reiterate my call on Libyan leaders to prioritize the needs of their people above all else. Let us come together, engage in constructive dialogue, and make the promise of elections a reality,” Bathily said on X. “The time to act is now. Seize the opportunity to unite, build confidence and pave the way for a brighter future for all Libyans,” he added.

244 migrants arrive in Italy following rescue operation off Libyan shores
244 women, men and children rescued from 3 boats in distress in off Libyan shores have arrived in the Italian port city of Bari, announced SOS Méditerranée on Saturday. The European NGO, which operates rescue ship Ocean Viking, rescued the migrants on December 27 on three different operations. 122 people, including 8 unaccompanied minors, were first rescued “from an overcrowded wooden boat in the Libyan Search and Rescue Region, under instructions of a Libyan patrol vessel,” said SOS Méditerranée. “An overcrowded double deck wooden boat was spotted in the international waters off Libya from the bridge lookout,” added the NGO. “Under Italian coordination, the OceanViking team rescued 106 people, including 8 women, 2 being pregnant and 4 children.”Then, the rescue shop spotted “an unseaworthy fiberglass boat” with 16 migrants onboard.

Workshop to develop health services and localise treatment – in presence of PM Aldabaiba
The Investment Company for Medical Services organized last Tuesday (26 December) in Tripoli, a workshop entitled “Developing Services to Localise Treatment” in cooperation with the Turkey’s Biotechnology Company for Medical and Pharmaceutical Supplies. This agreement will be to supply a factory for medical supplies and medicines inside Libya. He stressed that the goal of the agreement is to localise treatment inside Libya. It requires the provision of medical and pharmaceutical supplies in this stage and the manufacture of medicine and various medical solutions in the next stage. Al-Zayani pointed out the readiness of Investment Companies for Medical services to cooperate with local and international companies to localise medical industries in Libya and invest in the health sector.

Economy Minister Hwej meets German Chargé d’affaires to discuss enhancing economic cooperation
The Tripoli based Libyan Minister of Economy and Trade, Mohamed Al-Hwej, met last Thursday the German Chargé d’Affaires, Sven Krauspe, to follow-up on economic and trade cooperation between the two countries, and the mechanism for resuming the work of German companies in Libya in 2024. Encouraging German companies to return to LibyaWadi stressed Hwej’s encouragement of German companies to resume their work on projects contracted with Libyan institutions, and to participate in implementing the development and reconstruction plan and establishing investment projects, especially in the field of renewable energy, water, infrastructure, and technology transfer. He also said Minister Hwej called on German companies to participate in the 50th session of the Tripoli International Fair in May 2024. The Ministry of Economy will coordinate with the Commercial Department of the German Embassy, Wadi stated, to organize the Libyan-German Economic Forum 2024 in Tripoli and hold bilateral meetings between investors with the participation of the General Union of Chambers of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture and the Libyan Business Council. The meeting was held in the presence of the Minister’s Advisor, Mrs. Shather Al-Sayd, the Director of the Foreign Trade Department, Issam Al-Malhouf, and the Head of the International Cooperation Department, Faraj Al-Bey.

Arish Airport received 356 aircrafts carrying aid to Gaza since beginning of Israeli aggression
CAIRO - 30 December 2023: The total number of aircrafts that transported international aid to the residents of the Gaza Strip through Al-Arish Airport in North Sinai, since the beginning of the Israeli aggression on Gaza until today, has risen to 356 aircrafts. During the past few hours, the airport received two aid cargo planes from Poland and the Emirates. The Polish plane transported 33,352 tons of medical aid, and the Emirati plane transported 36 tons of food and medicine. Dr. Khaled Zayed, head of the Egyptian Red Crescent branch in North Sinai, said that it began receiving international aid to Gaza arriving by air through Al-Arish Airport in North Sinai on October 12, and volunteers unloaded its cargo and prepared it for transport to the Rafah crossing to reach the Gaza Strip. The international relief organizations from which the aid planes arrived came from the World Food Organization, UNICEF, the World Health Organization, the Red Cross, a plane from Doctors Without Borders, the European Union, and the United Nations.

278 migrants intercepted and returned to Tripoli
The Interior Ministry in Tripoli has announced the interception of 278 migrants of various nationalities in two separate operations, who were handed over to the Anti-Illegal Immigration Agency. The Ministry said in a statement that the first operation was carried out by a patrol of the General Administration of Coastal Security, during which 199 migrants were arrested, who were on board a rickety boat within Libyan territorial waters. The second operation was carried out by members of the Mellitah Coast Guard and Port Security Point on Thursday, during which 79 migrants were arrested from the sea after they had been stranded for two days.

Slow demand set to keep oil price near $80/b in 2024, Reuters poll shows
International oil prices are likely to stay near $80 a barrel in 2024, a Reuters poll showed on Friday, as analysts predicted weak global growth would cap demand, while geopolitical tensions could provide support. The analysts questioned whether the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and allies (OPEC+) would be able to sustain supply cuts to support the market. A survey of 34 economists and analysts forecast Brent crude would average $82.56 in 2024, down from November’s $84.43 consensus. Just one contributor expected prices to average above the $90 mark next year. U.S. crude was seen averaging $78.84 next year, from $80.50 last month.

Traffickers use new routes from Egypt, Libya
The intense use of new migrant routes from the coasts of Egypt and Libya to Gavdos, just south of Crete, has been recorded in recent months, while increased migration pressure has also been observed in the southeast Aegean and in particular Kos. On November 12, for example, one such boat with 33 migrants was spotted sailing south of Gavdos. They had sailed from Libya having paid $4,000 to the traffickers. In the 48 hours previous to writing, two more such incidents were recorded in the sea area south of Gavdos. During the autumn, migrants also followed the same route from Libya and Egypt to the coast of southern Crete, where also until recently no flows were recorded.

Rwanda Receives Over 150 Asylum Seekers From Libya
Rwanda on December 28, welcomed 153 asylum seekers evacuated from Libya, according to the Ministry in charge of Emergency Management (MINEMA). The ministry indicated that the asylum seekers are from five nationalities, namely 82 Sudanese, 56 Eritreans, five Somalis, nine Ethiopians, and one South Sudanese. Tonight, Rwanda welcomed 153 asylum seekers evacuated from Libya. They are from five nationalities: 82 Sudanese, 56 Eritrean, 5 Somali, 9 Ethiopian, and 1 South Sudanese. This is the 16th group of asylum seekers from Libya.

Malta sends mine detectors to war-torn Ukraine
The Civil Protection Department (CPD) has announced the dispatch of 25 mine detectors to aid the war-stricken people of Ukraine. This marks the second time this year that Malta is extending humanitarian assistance to Ukraine, following the provision of generators in January. The donation of mine detectors is part of Malta's participation in the European Union Civil Protection mechanism. "Once again, Malta is sending humanitarian aid to another country. Through the European Civil Protection mechanism, we are sending mine detectors inside Ukraine to be used in a country where its people are currently suffering due to war."

Youth From Across Libya Take Part In Model United Nations (UN) Simulation
