Türkiye set to reopen diplomatic mission in Libya
Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said he would visit Libya on Wednesday as Türkiye seeks to expand its ties to North African country. Amid the instability that followed the ouster of Moammar Gadhafi, Türkiye shut down the consulate in 2014. He said President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Putin would discuss the war in Ukraine and the Black Sea Grain Initiative during the visit. A Turkish official told Reuters last week he would visit Türkiye on Feb. 12. The Kremlin has said Erdoğan and Putin would discuss setting up a gas hub in Türkiye and the war in Ukraine during the visit.

Oil India looking at return to Libya after 2011 exit
Oil India is looking for more foreign assets and is in talks to restart drilling in Libya, a source familiar with the matter said. The source spoke on condition of anonymity because the person was not authorized to speak to media. Oil India exited Libya in 2011 due to political instability. Shares of the state-run explorer jumped as much as 12.4% to a record high of 516.40 rupees on Tuesday. The source said the company was in talks over two blocks in Libya, without giving a timeline for a possible deal.

REAoL leads high-level Interconnection Committee meeting in Rome
The Renewable Energy Authority of Libya (REAoL) reported yesterday that it led a team from the Electrical Interconnection Committee between Libya and Southern European countries in a high-level meeting in Rome last Friday 2 February. Pursuant to the Libyan Italian MoUIt said the meeting comes pursuant of what was stated in the memorandum of understanding that was signed between Libya and Italy for cooperation in several fields, including electrical interconnection between the two countries. It also comes specifically, it added, in continuation of the discussions related to the Libyan-Italian electrical interconnection proposal. The meeting was attended on the Libyan side by: Osama Al-Darrat, Advisor to the Prime Minister for Electricity and Renewable Energy Affairs and Chairman of the Electrical Interconnection Committee between Libya and Southern European Countries, and Abdul Salam Al Ansari, Chairman of REAoL and member of the Connectivity Committee, and Aseel Artema, Chairman of the Renewable Energy Holding Company and member of the Liaison Committee. The Chairman of the Electrical Interconnection Committee, REAoL added, stressed the necessity of intensifying the holding of these meetings and invited the Italian side to attend the next meeting that will be arranged in Libya.

LARMO discusses recovery of seized Libyan military aircraft with Tripoli based Air Force

Volume of trade exchange bet. Egypt, Libya reaches $1.7B in 2023
During the first 11 months of 2023, the value of Egyptian exports to Libya increased to record $1.6 billion, compared to $1.1 billion during the same period in 2022, an increase of 48 percent. The most important commodities that Egypt exported to Libya during 2023 are: ceramics and stones worth $322.5 million, plastics worth $145.8 million, fuel and oils worth $123.4 million. According to the data, the value of Egypt’s imports from Libya reached $61.7 million, compared to $85.5 million during the same period in 2022, a decrease of 28 percent. The most important commodities that Egypt imported from Libya during 2023, Iron and steel valued at $39.2 million, and inorganic chemical products worth $15.3 million. The value of Libyan investments in Egypt recorded $19.9 million during the FY 2022/2023 compared to $19.3 million during the FY 2021/2022, an increase of 3.1 percent.

Libyan parliament declares Zliten “devastated city” over groundwater crisis
Libya’s House of Representative declared Zliten a “devastated city” today due to the distraction caused by rising groundwater levels. This came during a parliamentary today in Benghazi, headed by the First Deputy Speaker of the House, Fawzi Al-Nuwairi. The city of Zliten, located in western Libya, has been experiencing a strange phenomenon for years: groundwater gushing upwards to damage buildings and agricultural land. Observers believe that the artificial river has increased the groundwater reserves on the coast, which caused cracks in the earth’s layers. Mostafa Al-Bahbah, head of the Crisis and Emergency Management Committee in Zliten Municipality, confirmed that the crisis of rising groundwater levels in some areas in Zliten Municipality was still ongoing and that some families had left their homes because of this problem.
