Ruchira Kamboj (India), Chair of the Security Council Committee established pursuant to resolution 1970 (2011) concerning Libya, also briefed the Council, presenting the Committee’s forty-seventh report covering the period from 31 August to 16 December. Unfortunately, the Libyan people were deprived of their historic duty and the Council was unable to condemn those who thwarted those elections. The international community must support national efforts towards a constitutional basis for conducting parliamentary and presidential elections as soon as possible. Also speaking were the representatives of China, Mexico, Brazil, France, Ireland, Norway, United Arab Emirates, United States and India. The Security Council should call for all international partners to avoid interference and obstruction.

TUNIS : The United Nations Envoy to Libya said alternative mechanisms might have to be used if rival sides cannot find a solution to the country's political crisis. Libya has had little peace since the 2011 NATO-backed uprising that ousted Muammar Gaddafi and led to a 2014 split between warring eastern and western factions. As Libya's political divisions have intensified this year, some of the political progress that had been made after a ceasefire between the main warring sides in 2020 has been undone. After the 2020 ceasefire, they agreed to hold elections on Dec. 24 2021 and installed a new unity government that was meant to reunify divided national institutions. It declared a new administration but the unity government refused to cede power and was still recognised by the United Nations and Western countries.

United Nations, Dec 17 (AP) The U.N. special envoy for Libya warned Friday that signs of partition are already evident in the troubled North African nation and urged influential nations to pressure Libya's rival leaders to urgently finalize the constitutional basis for elections. Oil-rich Libya plunged into chaos after a NATO-backed uprising toppled and killed longtime dictator Moammar Gadhafi in 2011. In the chaos that followed, the county split into two rival administrations, each backed by different rogue militias and foreign governments. The presidential vote was postponed over disputes between rival factions on laws governing the elections and controversial presidential hopefuls. The Tripoli-based council insists on banning military personnel as well as dual citizens from running for the country's top post.

He provided no hard evidence for any of his allegations and did not elaborate on his government's role in Mas'ud's handover. On Tuesday, Bashagha called Mas'ud's extradition illegal and urged his immediate release. Mas'ud's extradition has added to discontent among Libyans, long frustrated by years of chaos and division.
