A number of civil society organizations in Libya called for the trial of the kidnappers of the Libyan citizen, Abu Agila Al-Marimi, and for their extradition to the United States of America. “The kidnapping, transfer, and extradition of Al-Marimi is a blatant violation of international humanitarian law, and all covenants, laws, and norms. The trial of Al-Marimi is illegal, and it is a crime that puts the Dbeibeh government, its participants, and all officials in this government under accusation,” Libyan NGOs said in a joint statement. “The Lockerbie case was closed since 2008, by a presidential decision from George Bush Jr., and the US presidency issued a decree in 2008, stipulating its full commitment to ending any future claims and closing any cases filed by the families of the victims of the Lockerbie incident against Libya before US courts and abroad.”“The Presidential Council, the House of Representatives, and the Office of the Attorney General must quickly investigate in order to safely return the kidnapped hostage, Al-Marimi, to the homeland, and the Libyans must go out and denounce this crime and prosecute those responsible for handing over a Libyan citizen to foreign parties.”

Mas’ud, who allegedly confessed his crimes to a Libyan law enforcement official in September 2012, appeared just days after being captured in Libya. Mas’ud’s nephew, Abdulmenam Marimi, said armed men came to his family’s home in Tripoli in mid-November and took the accused bomb maker away. The family has also lodged a formal complaint with Libya’s attorney general over Mas’ud’s transfer to the US, Marimi said. Mas’ud was not formally charged by the US until 2020 when it uncovered fresh evidence revealing he had apparently confessed his crimes to a Libyan law enforcement official.
