Turkey-Libya energy accord riles Mediterranean waters Federica Saini FasanottiEgypt and Greece are calling on Turkey and Libya to scrap an energy exploration agreement that critics say violates exclusive economic zones off the Mediterranean coast. The two nations signed a memorandum of understanding that includes a controversial provision to jointly explore energy reservoirs in the Mediterranean Sea. The pipeline has been operative since 2004, covers 520 kilometers at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea and can transport 11 billion cubic meters annually. The port of Tartus in Syria is insufficient to support a permanent Russian Mediterranean presence. Returning to Russia: its presence in the Mediterranean benefits from improved relations with several countries in the region.

But Sisi, who is close to the Saudi and Emirati rulers, could be useful to Erdogan in maintaining those newly mended relations. Relations between Ankara and Athens have deteriorated to the point where Erdogan now routinely threatens military action. The Turkish leader would go on to label Sisi “an illegitimate tyrant” and swore never to speak with him. Erdogan remains determined to exploit hydrocarbons in Libyan waters, which would be a poke in Sisi’s eye. AdvertisementFor now, though, the Turkish leader needs his Egyptian counterpart.
