IMAGINE being able to jump the height of your chest using just one leg. National cricketer and mathematics teacher Harinder Sekhon was officially announced as the world record holder for highest single leg standing jump by Guinness World Records in May by hitting the height of 138.4cm. Harinder, who has just recently garnered two national records for the highest standing jump and most number of standing box jumps in one minute, credits his strenuous training and diet for his achievements. “My typical training would include 20 minutes of yoga in the morning and three hours of strength and jump training after work. He discovered jump training, also known as plyometrics, in December 2020 while researching different techniques of exercising to take his fitness to the next level.

GEORGE TOWN: Workers in restaurants and food outlets that are open for dine-in need not be fully vaccinated. Clarifying the confusion, George Town OCPD Asst Comm Soffian Santong said the National Security Council (NSC) was very clear that only customers must be fully vaccinated and not the workers. “However, the restaurants should display how many of their workers are fully vaccinated and customers can make their choice (whether) to eat at a particular outlet. State local government committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo said the state exco, which met yesterday, was in consensus that workers must be fully vaccinated. “It doesn’t make sense for customers to be fully vaccinated and not the workers.”

Cendol stall operator Tan Chong Kim, 63, said he would wait for others to allow dining-in before considering the option. States under Phase Two of the National Recovery Plan can allow dining-in at restaurants, non-contact sporting activities outdoors and at clubhouses and travel with stays in hotels and homestays. He said steamboat meals were usually served in packs of four and six or for large groups. “It would be great to offer dine-in meals again although I am not sure if people will come out to eat. “However, we need to survive so we have to offer dine-in on top of our takeaway option,” he said.

Recently-crowned Olympics champion Viktor Axelsen paid tribute to some of his greatest opponents for their role in turning him into the player he is today. And the 27-year-old Dane picked three greats Lee Chong Wei, Lin Dan and Chen Long, the man he dethroned to win the gold at the Tokyo Games. Chong Wei, in particular, was one rival Axelsen found to be a tough nut to crack as he only managed three wins in 14 meetings against the Malaysian from 2011-2018. He also has a poor head-to-head record against Chen Long. Axelsen, however, fared better against two-time Olympics champion Lin Dan, winning six out of their nine duels.

No doubt the Covid-19 pandemic disrupted our preparations, but other countries were affected by it, too. Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican is now propelling a new programme called National Sports Vision 2030 (VSN 2030), a long-term project specialising in sports that can win gold medals in the next two or three Olympic Games. But before looking at the new plan, the minister must study the post-mortem report on our athletes’ performance in Tokyo to find out where we fell short. One of the weaknesses in our sport development programme is the lack of grassroots talent spotting, which has created a huge deficit in our pool of athletes. The Education Ministry must also be roped in to enable talent spotting to be done at schools.

Obviously, the conventional ideal is for another Member of Parliament to command a new majority and form a new government. Option 1 is one in which we have a relatively recognisable government - a Prime Minister, a Cabinet, and so on. A Prime Minister with no political distractions and ambitions may finally be able to focus fully and unreservedly on the Covid-19 crisis, relying fully on the advice of actual public health and economic experts, instead of having to pander to political or monetary interests. Such a Prime Minister would ideally have no qualms stepping aside once the pandemic is controlled, and GE15 rolls around. Centuries later, our political deadlock is costing us thousands of Malaysian lives - it must be broken, no matter the cost.

HONG KONG/SINGAPORE/LONDON (Reuters) - A cryptocurrency platform has lost an estimated US$600 million in digital tokens after one of the sector's biggest ever hacking attacks, according to details of the heist which emerged on Wednesday. Poly Network, a decentralised finance platform (DeFi), announced the hack on Twitter and posted details of digital wallets to which it said the money was transferred, urging people to blacklist tokens from those addresses. The heist appears to be one of the biggest ever in cryptocurrency markets, and compares with the US$530 million in cryptocurrency stolen from Tokyo-based bitcoin exchange Coincheck in 2018. Gox," said Bobby Ong, co-founder of crypto analytics website CoinGecko, although he noted the fallout had not yet hurt major crypto prices. STOLEN TOKENSPoly tweeted it planned to take legal action and urged the hackers to return the assets, a move analysts said underscored how hard it is to recover stolen tokens.

PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) programme has been reactivated with several changes made to the policy. Announcing this, Home Ministry secretary-general Datuk Wan Ahmad Dahlan Abdul Aziz said the temporary halt of the programme last year had enabled his ministry as well as the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry to review and re-evaluate the MM2H programme. “New applications can be submitted beginning October, and this process will be overseen by the Immigration Department,” he said on Wednesday (Aug 11). There are currently 57,478 holders of the MM2H passes, as well as their dependents. “The government is introducing this category (ages 35 to 49), so that only participants who are financially stable and with permanent employment can apply for the MM2H programme,” said Wan Ahmad Dahlan.
