TOKYO (AFP): Japan on Tuesday (Aug 10) apologised for the death of a Sri Lankan woman in immigration detention and pledged to reform conditions in the system. Justice Minister Yoko Kamikawa said a report on the March death of 33-year-old Wishma Sandamali concluded she received inadequate treatment as her health deteriorated. "I express my heartfelt condolences to her mother and bereaved family, and my heartfelt apologies for (the) loss of this precious life in the detention centre," Kamikawa said. National broadcaster NHK said four officials at the detention centre were "reprimanded" over the death, but none were fired. "With the digital economy mushrooming since last year, I believe the government would look into catering the mega infrastructure projects more for carrying goods than passengers,” she told Bernama. Stressing further on the importance of good infrastructure projects, she said high speed rail projects should focus on achieving an equal development between rural and urban areas in line with aspirations of the Shared Prosperity Vision 2030. She said the pandemic has brought in the new norm of working from home and digital economy in which almost all jobs were operational online and, as such, less travelling is required. "There will be a reduced need for passenger movements but more on digital economy and online businesses whereby goods can be accessible through non-traditional markets,” she said. Touching on the upcoming Budget 2022, Aida believed that the government would emphasise boosting the digital economy and develop the sector further, in line with the purchasing patterns by consumers.

ONE of the critical aspects of this pandemic is having meaningful and granular data that can be used to make decisions. Deaths: This is the most reliable data set but does not count “late Covid-19 deaths occurring ≥15 days after diagnosis”. Currently, Health Ministry data only tracks Covid-19 deaths occurring at days one to 14 of the disease. Vaccination data by granular variablesWhile we have general data on vaccination we lack details – age, sex, ethnicity, and comorbidity by locality. When services are overrun, Covid-19 clinical category and deaths by facility daily is an important metric to add to our data transparency efforts.

Britney Spears’ dad claims his daughter’s day-to-day guardian called her “mentally sick” and possibly in need of another 5150 psychiatric hold during a phone call last month. Jamie Spears made the surprise claim in a sworn statement signed Friday (Aug 6) and submitted to a Los Angeles County judge to oppose a request for his immediate suspension as conservator of his Britney’s estate. He said Jodi Mongtomery, the temporary conservator selected to manage his daughter’s medical care and security when he stepped down from that part of the 13-year conservatorship in September 2019, sounded “very distraught” when she allegedly phoned him July 9. “Ms Montgomery acknowledged that many of my daughter’s statements at the last hearing were not true and attributed her statements to the fact that my daughter is ‘mentally sick',” Jamie said in his statement. In a filing Thursday, Britney’s new lawyer Mathew Rosengart said the Toxic singer remains traumatised and is losing sleep each day her estranged dad remains in control of her finances against her explicit wishes.

I REFER to the letter “Safety standards for cooking gas cylinders” from the Consumers Association of Penang published in The Star on Aug 7 (online at bit.ly/star_gas). Accidents arising from the use of cooking gas often happen but most of the time they are due to inadequate knowledge of the users. Cooking gas, commonly known as liquefied petroleum gas or LPG, is a mixture of propane and butane gases. The gas is odourless but when it is produced as cooking gas, it is odourised with ethyl mercaptan at the refinery storage terminals. Basically, the company that fills LPG cylinders ensures they provide safe cooking gas cylinders to their consumers.

KUALA KRAI: A former bank officer’s venture into oyster mushroom cultivation during the movement control order in March last year has brought him lucrative returns. Mahadi Mohd Jusoh, 51, said he decided to resign in 2016 to take care of his mother Zaharah Ahmad, 70, who fell ill after his father Mohd Jusoh Mat, 81, died in the same year. He said that after a friend suggested that he cultivate oyster mushrooms, he bought about 100 ready-to-fruit blocks of mushroom spawns which came with racks for the blocks, with a capital of RM2,000. “Thank God, my first attempt bore fruit when I harvested 30kg of oyster mushrooms which I gave away to neighbours for free. This is due to the various products made with mushrooms such as chips, mushroom popiah and fried mushrooms.

PETALING JAYA: Most of Malaysia's Covid-19 infections, especially serious cases that require intensive care unit (ICU) treatment, are now coming from the unvaccinated. The Star's analysis of Health Ministry figures show that eight of out of 10 people who were infected over the past two weeks have not gotten a vaccine jab.In the 14-day period from July 26 to Aug 8 a total of 249,102 Covid-19 cases were reported, of which 204,087 (81.9%) were classified as patients with no vaccination history. The remaining 45,015 (18.1%) were classified as patients with a history of vaccination, though no breakdown was available on how many among them had gotten one dose and how many had received both jabs. There was also no information on how many among the unvaccinated who got infected had already registered for vaccination, or how many of them were not yet eligible for vaccination, such as those below the age of 18.Currently, under-18s are allowed to register for their jabs, although the vaccination rollout for this group is still being reviewed for its benefits and risks. At the moment, only children with chronic health conditions will be prioritised for vaccination. With Malaysia now fighting its fiercest Covid-19 outbreak since the pandemic began, the figures point to the importance of further ramping up vaccinations. The data also shows that vaccines give effective protection from severe disease in the event of a breakthrough infection, which is when someone gets Covid-19 after being fully vaccinated.Of the 2,881 Covid-19 patients listed as Categories 4 and 5 in the past two weeks, 2,584 or 89.7% were those with no vaccination history.Category 4 and 5 are cases that need treatment in ICU.Patients in Category 3 are those who require hospital treatment and observation.Category 1 refers to cases with no symptoms, while Category 2 are cases where patients show mild symptoms. The ministry has been issuing daily updates on the number of vaccinated and unvaccinated in new Covid-19 cases since July 26.According to the ministry's daily updates, the classification of Covid-19 patients by their category of illness was made based on their clinical situation when they were first diagnosed with Covid-19.As at Aug 8, 15,772,101 people or 67.4% of the country's population aged 18 and above have received their first dose.Of the 15.7 million, 8,770,336 (37.5%) have gotten both doses.
