TOKYO (Reuters) -The Olympic teams of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan paraded mostly maskless through Tokyo's National Stadium at Friday's Games opening ceremony, marking an awkward contrast with other national teams who covered their faces in line with COVID-19 protocols. "My kids pointed out that this country forgot their masks," laughed one Japanese user called Panda Panda, while another person questioned whether central Asian countries missed the memo about mask wearing. A third, Adma Steiner, joked that Turkmenistan, a third Central Asian and former Soviet republic, had "really walked out and stabbed Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan in the back by actually wearing masks". Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov was on Friday quoted by domestic press agency AKIpress as saying COVID-19 vaccinations were voluntary. TOKYO (July 23): Olympic organisers on Friday thanked medical workers at a Tokyo 2020 opening ceremony overshadowed by the coronavirus, as athletes from across the world paraded into an almost empty stadium, for the first time their smiles hidden behind masks. Most countries were represented by both male and female flagbearers in an Olympic first, but not everybody took pandemic measures. Teams from Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and the Pakistan flagbearers paraded maskless in an awkward contrast to protocol and the vast majority of other athletes at the ceremony. Most nations were represented by a man and a woman after the organisers changed their rules to allow two flagbearers. The ceremony was marked by high-profile absences, including former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who wooed the Games to Tokyo.

When I was a kid, I learned from my mother that my grandfather was a high-ranking general in Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek’s army. My grandfather subsequently remarried and had five children: Zhao Liang (Alex), Yu Liang (Sally), Xiao Liang (Fred), Zhong Liang (Al) and Wen Liang (Pearl). In later years, my grandfather became the Dean of Political Science at the Huang Pu Military Academy. A very meaningful part of my grandfather’s life was his constant effort to build a bridge between the overseas Chinese and their motherland. He wrote editorials in the overseas newspapers to enlighten overseas Chinese about the situation in China and rally support for Chiang Kai-shek.

A problem you no longer see fit to treat – or have I become a burden, being old and blind in one eye? It was the worst of times, what with the raging Covid-19 pandemic, imposed social distancing and nationwide movement restrictions. And twice daily, I am inspected from head/ ears to paws and tail to ensure I stay in tip-top condition. The injections help my inflamed and irritable skin to heal.

MUMBAI (Reuters) -An Indian court on Friday dismissed appeals by Amazon.com Inc and Walmart's Flipkart that sought to stall an antitrust investigation into their business practices, dealing a major setback to the U.S. firms in a key market. On Friday, the High Court in southern Karanataka state rejected the U.S. firms' appeals. The two firms are likely to appeal the decision at India's Supreme Court, according to people familiar with the case. After years of waiting, Richard Branson's journey to space this month on a Virgin Galactic vessel was supposed to be a triumphant homecoming. "The carbon dioxide emissions are totally negligible compared to other human activities or even commercial aviation," Nasa's chief climate advisor Gavin Schmidt told AFP. The company "has already taken steps to offset the carbon emissions from its test flights and is examining opportunities to offset the carbon emissions for future customer flights, and reduce our supply chain's carbon footprint", it said in a statement to AFP. When SpaceX puts four private citizens into space in September, it will use its Falcon 9 rocket, which calculations show puts out the equivalent of 395 transatlantic flights-worth of carbon emissions. "Who would want to be a space tourist if you can't tell people you were a space tourist?"
