#TechUntukSemua offers reprieve for local family businesses in face of the pandemic to carry their legacies into the next generation. Even with resumption of economic activities, many are still in the process of rebuilding their business and recouping losses sustained during the MCO. This is part of Grab’s commitment to get small business owners to embrace technology to sustain themselves. “Not many fishmongers think they will benefit from using technology in their business. Business has picked up, and we see the benefits of dine-in and delivery.”Such initiatives have greatly helped local businesses sustain during the MCO.

It is heartening to note the statement by National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme Coordinating Minister Khairy Jamaluddin that the Federal Government is amenable to the initiative by the Sarawak and Selangor authorities to procure vaccines on their own. The minister said the vaccines would require the approval of the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency. Khairy, however, stated that the Selangor authorities have not yet officially written to the Federal Government about its plan. According to the latest update by the federal authorities, residents in Selangor are due to receive their vaccinations from April 26, and those in Kuala Lumpur from May. As both Selangor and Kuala Lumpur are highly-populated locations, I am sure the authorities are doing their best to ensure that the whole exercise will be conducted as efficiently as possible.

Amazon.com Inc is poised to bring its automated checkout technology to full-size supermarkets, a significant milestone in the race to revolutionise how people buy their groceries. Amazon says it has created thousands of grocery jobs since the launch of the first Fresh store last year. But apart from a test at a Fresh store in suburban Chicago, the new chain doesn’t feature Go-style automated checkout – prompting surprise from industry watchers anticipating a less traditional approach. Equipping a 2,000-square-foot convenience store with cameras can be done with a few dozen devices. The sales floor – the area that would need to be policed by camera arrays – is about 20,000 square feet.

On one hand, this can be used by detractors to accuse me of inconsistency, but on the other hand, surely views are allowed to evolve over a decade. One shift I readily admit to is being too ideological in the past, and more pragmatic in accepting public policy possibilities today. At the same time, one can continue to hope that those who do take the political route retain a strong moral fibre. Of course, this Ramadan 1442 is now the second in which the normal scenes of Ramadan are curtailed. The views expressed are the writer’s own.

PETALING JAYA: Education stakeholders, though concerned for the health and safety of teachers and students, believe a blanket nationwide closure of schools should only be the last resort. For example, Goh said students of different levels could take turns coming into school on different days of the week. Goh also said students tend to follow the standard operating procedure closely when they are within the school compound but not outside. Parent Action Group for Education chairman Datin Noor Azimah Abdul Rahim also said that it was better to only close affected schools.
