We need back-end developers, front-end developers, security engineers, UI/UX experts and cloud engineers — all of which are specific skill-based talent.” Lowe suspects that there is a digital talent supply issue in the job market. 2 MCO as a catalyst for job changesWorkSmartly founder Victor Phang tells Digital Edge that, although it is actively hiring new digital talent during MCO 2.0, its recruitment exercises are not as aggressive as they were in May 2020 after the relaxation of the first MCO. “One of the reasons we were aggressive in recruiting digital talent after the first MCO was because we were familiar with the work-from-home culture. NEW DELHI: Internet freedom advocates on Feb 26 warned new Indian social media regulations could pose a threat to freedom of expression, after New Delhi announced plans for tough new rules that could force platforms to remove content it deems objectionable. Tech companies will also have to disclose the origin of a “mischievous tweet or message” if asked by an Indian court or the government. The social media giant wants regulation “that protects the open Internet, universal access, and promotes competition and innovation”, they added. Information Technology Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said tech companies have to be “more responsible, more accountable”, describing the rules as “soft-touch oversight”. “They accept that there will have to be some kind of regulation,” the official said on condition of anonymity.

WHILE most of those affected by unemployment during the Covid-19 crisis were youths, the biggest increase in unemployment percentage has come from the older age groups. “What the data is suggesting is that the Covid-19 pandemic is affecting older workers disproportionately, and it is not a surprising trend. Older workers may be targets for retrenchment as they may have higher salaries due to their years of work. However, there are also other discriminations that are faced by older workers with low salaries. Furthermore, it adds that employers could hold stereotypical views that older workers may not adapt well with remote work settings that require technological skills.
