Nigerian Chef Hilda Effiong Bassey, also known as Hilda Baci, made history on May 15, 2023, by breaking the Guinness World Record for the longest cooking time by an individual. Baci’s cooking marathon challenge began on May 11 at Amore Gardens in Lekki, Lagos State, where she cooked continuously for four days. By 08:32 am on May 15, Baci had cooked for 88 hours and 32 minutes, a time that equaled the record set by Indian chef Lata Tondon in 2019. Notable Nigerian leaders, including Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, President-elect Bola Tinubu, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, have voiced their support for the young Nigerian chef. Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu visited Chef Hilda at the cooking marathon venue to show his support.

Nigeria’s oil production had been on the rise since September 2022, following concerted efforts by the Federal Government and stakeholders to curb oil theft in the sector. The 1.258mbpd oil production in January 2023 was about 23,000bpd higher than the 1.235mbpd crude oil output in December 2022. But the volume dropped to 1.27mbpd in March, putting an end to the seven-month run in Nigeria’s oil output. To help stem the loss of crude, The PUNCH recently reported that the Federal Government directed the NUPRC to monitor crude oil production and take over the regulatory oversight of crude oil export terminals nationwide.

An explosive device suspected to be a mini bomb, on Sunday night, exploded in Jalingo, the Taraba State capital. The incident occurred at the Doruwa drinking joint opposite Polaris Bank, affecting some buildings within the area while an unspecified number of persons were injured in the incident. Stransact (Chartered Accountants), the correspondent firm of RSM, a global accounting and auditing firm in the world, has recommended tax related reforms for the government to improve and sustain the economy. Stransact Partners noted that the middle class in Nigeria was fast disappearing due to the collapse and relocation of companies that would have employed skilled and educated workforce. According to the partners, Nigeria had one of the highest multiplicities of tax in the world. “Introducing facilities and regulations that will formalise the unregulated sectors of the economy will widen the tax net and increase the tax revenue available for government,” Athe said. Pakistan’s former prime minister Imran Khan called for nationwide “freedom” protests on Sunday, after his brief arrest and detention this week triggered deadly unrest. For months, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party leader has waged a campaign of defiance against the military. At least 10 senior PTI leaders have been arrested since the protests began, one of Khan’s lawyers said. It’s the military behind (Khan’s arrest),” 21-year-old PTI supporter Mohsin Khan told AFP outside the party chief’s home. As operatives of the Delta State Police Command continue to mount pressure on criminals in the state, suspected kidnappers of a couple, Mrs Okutonye Efetobore, have been arrested. The duo were abducted on April 27 in Ughellli town, and a ransom of one million naira was paid before their release. But uncomfortable with the development, the new Commissioner of Police, CP Wale Abass, on assumption of office, directed the Command Decoy Squad to embark on an intelligence-led investigation and ensure that the kidnappers were apprehended. He said when the apartment of the suspect was searched, a bag containing a locally-fabricated pistol and three rounds of 7.62 AK47 live ammunition were recovered. He quoted CP Abass as assuring residents of the Delta that the command would be working round the clock to ensure that those terrorizing the state were brought to justice.
