Day time temperature is likely to be above normal across the country this year, leading to losses of agricultural production, the Federal Government stated on Thursday. It disclosed this in a report titled, “2023 Climate-Related Disaster Preparedness and Mitigation Strategies for Nigeria,” put together and released in Abuja by the National Emergency Management Agency. Later than normal onset dates are expected over parts of northern states.”It added, “Below normal rainfall is predicted over some places in the extreme North. Recall that truckers had expressed readiness to flood Lekki Port aftermath the arrival of the container ship, GSL Alice to the port last week to offload some cargoes for a firm in the Free Trade Zone. According to Mr. Jama Onwubuariri, “The electronic call-up system has successfully managed truck traffic in the Apapa and TinCan ports, and we are ready to deploy it at the Lekki Epe port. We are confident that similar success can be replicated in the Lekki Epe axis should the call-up system be introduced. “We’re confident that when the electronic call-up system is implemented in the Lekki-Epe axis, the concerns over traffic that residents and businesses are currently expressing will be eradicated to the barest minimum. “So far, about 1,3m port bound and non-port trucks have been processed via the Eto call-up system.”

A Muslim group, Sisters of Jannah, has donated food items, clothes and other welfare materials to widows and the underprivileged in the Wasinmi area of Ewekoro Local Government Area of Ogun State. The 50 women who benefitted from the donation were drawn from Asalatu, Alubarika, at Oluwatosin Hajia Zainab Junaid Memorial Mosques in the council area. The group coordinator for the Abeokuta Zone, Sherifat Aminu, explained that the aim of the donation was to give to humanity, educate and empower people. Aminu said the group specialised in giving out to the underprivileged as the project was one of many being undertaken by the group every year. According to her, Sisters of Jannah is an international organisation with presence in all the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

This night when the great message for all and all ages was revealed to the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW), in Cave Hira, near Mecca in 610 A. This is demonstrated in the first message revealed on the Night of Majesty as knowledge is power out of which all forms of power derive their potency, the first revelation was for man to “Read, recite, rehearse or proclaim in the name of thy Lord…” (Q.96:1-5). As sacred and mysterious as the Night of Power might be, the shrouded particular day of Ramadan makes it more unique at least in spiritual sense. Yet, the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW) says that the hidden fact about the night may be for our own good afterwards. Really, the Holy Qur’an, the incorruptible divine revelation, describes the Night of Power as better than a thousand months (Qur’an 97:3).

A man, Moses Gibson, from Minneapolis, Minnesota in the United States, has undergone a leg surgery to add five inches to his height after struggling to talk to women for years due to self-doubt about his stature. The financing agreement document for the National Social Safety Net Programme – Scale Up between the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the International Development Association of the World Bank was obtained by The PUNCH on Tuesday. The objective of the project is to expand coverage of shock-responsive safety net support among the poor and vulnerable and strengthen Nigeria’s national safety net delivery system till June 30, 2024. The document signed by the Nigerian finance minister and the World Bank Country Director for Nigeria, Shubham Chaudhuri, on August 16, 2022, revealed that the loan was concessional financing. According to the World Bank, concessional finance is below-market-rate finance provided by major financial institutions, such as development banks and multilateral funds, to developing countries to accelerate development objectives.

Sahara Group has announced the commencement of this year’s edition of its Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) educational programme for students in Africa. The programme, known as Sahara STEAMers programme will run concurrently in four countries and feature eight schools from Nigeria, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. Speaking about the programme at this year’s launch, the Director of Sustainability and Governance, Sahara Group Foundation, Ejiro Gray, said the foundation is partnering STEMCafe, a non-linear learning centre, to jointly bring the objective of the programme to realisation. Founder, STEMCafe, Bosun Tijani, stated that the partnership had given STEMCafe the opportunity to introduce young secondary school students in Africa to STEAM education and its application towards solving real-life problems. He challenged this year’s participants to use the programme to acquire skills that will set them on an inspiring and ambitious pathway.

Giant tech company, Meta, has launched a payment feature on its WhatsApp service for users and local business owners based in Brazil. The company announced via its website on Tuesday that Brazil’s WhatsApp users can now pay businesses via the app’s end-to-end encrypted chat. “The release read in part, On WhatsApp in Brazil, you can search for a business, browse goods and services, add them to your cart and make a payment all with just a few taps. “It’s now possible to pay for goods and services using Mastercard and Visa debit, credit and pre-paid cards issued by the numerous banks participating in the service. While the feature is only currently available in Brazil, Meta stated that plans to make the feature available in other countries are in the works.

The Federal Government on Tuesday said it is working to remove multiple taxation on roads to promote free movement of goods within the country. The government said that multiple taxation on roads was against ECOWAS rules and regulations. Sambo said, “We’re working on that because multiple taxation on our roads is against ECOWAS rules of free movement of goods. After the last road monitoring exercise, the notes are yet to come in full, but we will discuss with the state commissioners of transport the issue of multiple taxation.
