But counts one, two, three, four, five, eight and 15 show some allegations, which the defendant has to answer. “The court shall proceed to try the defendant on those counts,” Justice Nyako ordered. But counsel to the Federal Government, Shaibu Labaran, urged the court to refuse the application, arguing that Kanu had allegedly violated the earlier bail granted him. Nyako adjourned the matter till May 18 for ruling on the bail application, and May 26 for commencement of trial. The separatist group had ordered South East residents to sit at home any day Kanu, would appear in the court as a mark of solidarity.

The asset managers, which the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, described as top-rated, are the AAA Consortium, Chapel Hill Denham, Africa Infrastructure Investment Managers and Sanlam Infraworks. Emefiele pointed out that the asset managers, who will be working concurrently to achieve set goals, “have concluded the initial discussions on how they will operate together to deliver infrastructure to the nation”. From public health, climate change and the energy transition to infrastructure and beyond, the public sector cannot resolve these issues by itself. However, as global trade networks retreat and agreements fail, Africa moves against this trend, providing opportunities to companies in Nigeria. For Nigerian companies to focus successfully on their competencies, they need to be assured of the infrastructure that they rely upon.

Ng had pleaded not guilty to conspiracy and money-laundering under US foreign anti-corruption laws. Ng’s lawyers had claimed that Leissner, a cooperating government witness who pleaded guilty to similar charges in 2018, had falsely implicated him. The charges against both men stemmed from a scheme in which Goldman helped 1MDB raise $6.5bn through three bond sales. Ng is the first and probably only person to face trial in the United States over the scheme. Goldman in 2020 paid nearly $3bn in fines, and its Malaysian unit agreed to plead guilty.

The rise was led by vegetable oils, cereals and meat sub-indices, according to details highlighted in the FAO Food Price Index report released on Friday. The report said the FAO Vegetable Oil Price Index averaged 248.6 points in March, up 46.9 points from February and hitting a new record high. “The sharp rise of the index was driven by higher sunflower, palm, soy and rapeseed oil prices. “Noticeably, volatile and higher crude oil values also lent support to international vegetable oil prices,” it said. “International poultry meat prices firmed, fuelled by reduced supplies from leading exporting countries following avian flu outbreaks, further impacted by Ukraine’s inability to export poultry meat amid the ongoing conflict.

Last week, a string of attacks in northwestern Kaduna state culminated in an assault on a train running from the capital Abuja to Kaduna city. At least eight people were killed, a number of passengers were abducted and gunmen released a video showing a high-profile captive. Analysts say some Boko Haram militants also operate in Niger State and the al-Qaeda linked Ansaru group is present in Kaduna State. One security source said the speaker in the Kaduna video had a Kanuri Hausa accent, indicating he was from the northeast. But he said the use of explosives in the train attack may point to some jihadist collaboration, perhaps with Ansaru elements.
