The best way to help children out of future misery is to allow them pass through present challenges. Great parents don’t do things for their children; they do things with their children. When parents think for their children, they destroy the future ability of their wards to think independently of them. The appalling situation whereby some parents help their children to ‘buy’ their way to the top must stop. The world is not waiting for over- pampered children; the world is waiting for responsible adults.

Conceptually, social security is rooted in welfarism and it has come to be accepted even in capitalist societies as a means of providing some form of social safety nets for the less privileged in the society. Presently, many Nigerians have been left out of the economic welfare equation and a greater focus on social security and social protection is very much necessary. This was pivotal to the ILO Income Security Recommendation 67 of 1944 and the subsequent drafting of the ILO Social Security (Minimum Standards) Convention 102 of 1952. There is also the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights which addresses the issue of social security. Hence, a major challenge in the promotion of social security is the non-justiciability of the right and the Nigerian laws on social security are inadequate in their content and scope of application.

In 2021 Burna Boy took home a Grammy for his album Twice as Tall and was featured on tracks by the likes of Sia, Justin Bieber, and John Legend. That’s to say nothing of the collaboration between Kenyan artistes like Sauti Sol and India Arie or between Ghana’s Kwesi Arthur and British rap giant Stormzy. For years, the phrase “Africa rising” was applied to the continent’s growing economies and vibrant business space. But it’s becoming increasingly apparent that the phrase could equally be applied to Africa’s music scene. Okumu is Spotify Head of Music in Saharan Africa.

SIR: Nigerians have a troubled history with their criminal justice system. Whether it is loud complaints that the system accommodates yawning cracks through which master criminals escape, to suspicions about the competence of those who run the system to outright outrage when those who know nothing about heinous crimes go in while the guilty escape, the entire criminal justice system seems to be one big booby trap. Many Nigerians cite the struggles of the criminal justice system as the chief reason why the country continues to lurch from insecurity to insecurity, cutting down many people in the process. How, many ask, would bandits, Boko Haram or ISWAP for example, freely operate if their kingpins and foot soldiers are clinically and constantly arrested, prosecuted, convicted and incarcerated?
