HONG KONG: Investors further unloaded shares in Asia on Thursday as they girded themselves for more interest rate hikes aimed at slowing runaway inflation, with some analysts warning that markets could retest the lows touched in June. The hawkish remarks out of the Fed have dealt a hefty blow to a rally in markets from their June lows. The downbeat mood in New York and Europe, which is also being buffeted by a major energy crisis, spread to Asia. The prospect of more US rate hikes continued to press the dollar higher against all other currencies, with the psychological 140 yen mark well within sight for the first time since 1998. "There [would probably] be some sort of verbal intervention as 140 approaches," said David Lu of NBC Financial Markets Asia.

A unique characteristic of the English modal auxiliary is that unlike main verbs, they don't have "-s" and "-ing" forms. This is why in the particular case of the modal auxiliary "need," it doesn't have the "s" in the sentence "He need not pay to enter the sports arena." The modal "need" is typically used in three grammatical situations: (1) in negative statements, as in "You need not go now"; (2) in questions, as in "Need he go now?" The strange thing about the modal "need" is that it grammatically malfunctions when used in the positive sense. The resulting sentence certainly doesn't sound right: "He need pay to enter the sports arena."

The Constitution bars foreign universities from setting up campuses in the Philippines. These foreign universities offer the same curriculum as that in their home countries, but charging tuition and other fees at local rates. Foreign universities will still be under Philippine laws and supervised by the Department of Education for grade schools and high schools, and the Commission on Higher Education for colleges and universities. Bahasa Malaysia and a general course on Malaysian culture are taught at the foreign universities in Malaysia. World-class universities follow stringent hiring policies that are not dependent on the patronage system, the way some local universities do in their hiring policies.

Gilas head coach Chot Reyes doesn’t mind receiving all the hate and negativity for as long as his players would continue to receive the same amount of love and support from their fans. When he was introduced to the crowd, it was quite an unpleasant atmosphere inside the arena as the crowd shouted boos meant for Reyes. Reyes, who is also head coach of the TNT Tropang Giga, also reiterated that there is “no individual consideration” involved when he was reintroduced as the national team head coach. His service, being in the post as Gilas’ tactician, is all for the flag and the country, added Reyes. Clarkson, in the same press conference, also called for a halt to all the hate and negativity surrounding Reyes.

XINHUA PHOTOWASHINGTON, D.C.: Facebook has reached a preliminary agreement in a long-running lawsuit seeking damages from the social network for allowing third parties, including the company Cambridge Analytica, to access users' private data. The social network did not indicate the amount or terms of the agreement in the class action. Cambridge Analytica, which has since shut down, had collected and exploited, without their consent, the personal data of 87 million Facebook users, to which the platform had given it access. In 2019, federal authorities fined Facebook $5 billion for misleading its users and imposed independent oversight of its personal data management.

Starlink is run by SpaceX and provides satellite internet access to 39 countries. In fact, that is one of the reasons why they decided to set up Starlink in the Philippines," Uy said. He stressed satellite technology is "not for everyone," particularly in urban areas where fiber optics had been laid down. However, for the Philippines, which has more than 7,100 islands, satellite technology is more appropriate. We really have to use satellite technology in order to effectively provide internet connectivity to these areas," he added.

Misinformation about the Philippine debt might be harmful to crafting policies needed for a robust recovery from the economic impact of the ongoing pandemic. Recently, the Philippine Daily Inquirer incorrectly reported that a third of the proposed 2023 national budget was allotted for paying off the country's debt. PHOTO BY JOHN RYAN BALDEMOR"Only 11.6 percent or P611.0 billion of the P5.268 trillion proposed 2023 national budget is allocated for debt burden. That statement mentioned that debt servicing in the proposed budget was higher than this year's allocation of 10.8 percent, but lower than in 2021, when it was 12.4 percent. False concerns raised about the Philippine debt could turn public opinion against tough but sound economic policy measures.
