GENEVA: The World Health Organization's (WHO) emergency committee on Covid-19 on Wednesday unanimously affirmed that the coronavirus remained a major public health danger and insisted that countries must stop dropping their guard. With many nations relaxing public health and social measures, and drastically reducing testing for the virus, the global health body's group of experts said the pandemic was far from over. "The situation is far from over with regard to the Covid-19 pandemic. It concluded that the pandemic still constituted a public health emergency of international concern (Pheic) — the highest level of alert that the WHO can sound. This was the lowest number of Covid deaths since the early days of the pandemic.

BAMAKO, Mali — It was market day in the town of Moura in central Mali when Malian troops backed by white mercenaries descended in helicopters and opened fire on bewildered residents, according to witnesses’ accounts. But dozens of white men in army fatigues who spoke what the residents believed was Russian, were actively involved, they said. French is widely spoken in Mali, but the government soldiers and the white men communicated in sign language as they did not speak the same language. The white men were the first to get out of the helicopters and open fire on fleeing residents, four onlookers said. ADVERTISEMENTBut the witness accounts bolstered evidence gathered by New York-based Human Rights Watch, which last week alleged that Malian soldiers assisted by suspected Russians killed about 300 civilians in Moura.

MADRID — Spanish authorities have destroyed 415,000 hemp plants worth up to 100 million euros ($108 million) in an operation to dismantle what police said on Wednesday was Europe’s biggest cannabis plantation. While CBD sale and consumption is legal across Spain and most of Europe, Spanish law still prohibits the cultivation of cannabis plants for anything other than industrial uses, such as for textiles and seeds, according to the Agriculture Ministry. Three people were arrested as a result of the operation, which began in mid-2021 when police discovered one of the fields. The Guardia Civil said the plantation owner initially presented the farm as a legal operation to produce industrial cannabis but was later found to be planning to export large quantities to Italy and Switzerland for processing into CBD. The city’s beleaguered bar trade has cried foul over what it calls the government’s double standards in fighting the Covid pandemic, with the industry being left out in the latest easing of social distancing measures. Ben Leung Lap-yan, charter president of the Licensed Bar and Club Association of Hong Kong, slammed the government’s decision not to allow the reopening of bars and pubs in the latest easing of social distancing measures as “discrimination”. Leung accused the government of being unfair to his industry as bars in Hong Kong have always been the first to close and the last to reopen under different social-distancing phases. He said he did not see much of a difference in the business operation between the city’s bars and restaurants, with many restaurants with a liquor license also serving alcohol to customers. The lawmaker also called on authorities to review the city’s flight suspension mechanism and border rules in a timely manner to facilitate travel.

GENEVA — A Covid-19 vaccine effective against multiple variants is possible before the end of 2022, the head of US pharmaceutical giant Pfizer said Wednesday. ADVERTISEMENT“I hope, clearly by autumn… that we could have a vaccine” that worked against not only the dominant Omicron but all known variants, he said. The IFPMA briefing condemned suggestions that intellectual property rights on Covid-19 vaccines should be temporarily lifted during the pandemic, in a bid to increase production. With more than a billion vaccine doses being produced every month, Eli Lilly chairman David Ricks called it “a solution looking for a problem”, while Bourla branded the idea “insane”. Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor said on Wednesday that the SAR government will not distribute rapid antigen test kits to all students ahead of school resumption, citing public resources should only go to those in need. Hong Kong schools are scheduled to resume face-to-face teaching after the Easter holidays, and pupils and teachers will be required to take rapid tests every day. At her daily press briefing, Lam said she understood there have been calls for the government to hand out rapid antigen test (RAT) kits to every student in the territory. She said the government has since reserved 10 million RAT kits to be distributed to students from households receiving government subsidies. She stressed that those who needed to obtain more RAT kits could head to the city’s 89 distribution points when necessary.
