The Comelec continues to delete the names of dead voters based on the list submitted by the local civil registrars,” Commissioner George Garcia said. "The Comelec continues to delete the names of dead voters based on the list submitted by the local civil registrars," Commissioner George Garcia said. As mandated by law, the civil registrar's office must issue a death certificate to enable the Comelec to legally delete from its voters' list the name of deceased voters. Jimenez cautioned that this could affect the credibility of the polls, thus the need to remove the deceased from the voters' list. The Comelec has appealed to the public for help by reporting the names of their dead relatives or friends so their names can be removed from the voters' list.

Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks dunks against Joel Embiid of the Philadelphia 76ers yesterday at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. (AFP)Milwaukee star Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 40 points and rejected a Joel Embiid shot with seconds remaining to propel the NBA champion Bucks to a key 118-116 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Tuesday. It was the second-most first-half points allowed by the Lakers in franchise history — after the 83 conceded to the Celtics in 1959. “Not good enough in any way,” was Lakers coach Frank Vogel’s assessment after watching Mavs star Luka Doncic ride roughshod over his players. Out of a timeout Harden missed a three-pointer and Embiid grabbed the rebound for a put-back attempt that Antetokounmpo blocked with 1.6 seconds left.

A health expert estimated that Hong Kong’s actual Covid mortality rate should be 0.18 percent -- not much higher than the 0.1 percent for seasonal influenza. Speaking on a radio program on Monday, Ivan Hung Fan-ngai, co-convenor of the government’s vaccine panel, said the mortality rate of 0.63 percent estimated by authorities should be an exaggeration. He said the SAR government’s official case count should not be used to calculate the mortality rate, as many people did not report their cases. Instead, he found the University of Hong Kong's estimation to be more relevant -- that 4 million people were believed to have contracted the coronavirus. Hung said if the figure 4 million is used as the base, the mortality rate of Covid will drop to around 0.18 percent -- as compared to the rate of 0.1 percent for seasonal influenza.

The war in Ukraine and Russia's effective exclusion from the global currency system could be an opportunity for China to raise the profile of its currency in a challenge to the U.S. dollar, a senior Taiwanese security official said on Monday. "Whether in renminbi trade or currency issuance system, this is an opportunity that must be taken" by China, Chen said, using the yuan's formal name. "The Ukraine-Russia war is maybe another 911-style opportunity," he said. Beijing has repeatedly voiced opposition to the sanctions on russia and has insisted it will maintain normal economic and trade exchanges. It has declined to condemn Moscow's action in Ukraine or call it an invasion.

VATICAN CITY — Pope Francis led the world’s Catholic bishops on Friday evening as they prayed for peace between Russia and Ukraine. The Pope presided at a service in St. Peter’s Basilica, entrusting the protection of all humanity, “especially Russia and Ukraine,” to Mary, who Christians believe is the Mother of God. Since Russia invaded its neighbor on Feb. 24 in what it called a “special military operation,” the Pope has implicitly criticized Moscow. But on Friday, he used the words Russia and Russians as part of his prayer and homily. The Pope mentioning Russia on Friday’s prayer was welcomed by some Church traditionalists who otherwise generally oppose Pope Francis.

Some observers speculate that Putin is playing the nuclear card because the Russian invasion of Ukraine has not been the juggernaut it was perceived to be. And that decision could push the world to the brink of a nuclear war. In 1970, 191 countries signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, a landmark pact meant to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons, promote cooperation in harnessing nuclear energy to peaceful uses and bringing the world closer to nuclear disarmament. Rising nuclear stockpileBut here is the staggering reality: despite the non-proliferation treaty, the global inventory of nuclear weapons remains high. As decreed by the treaty, nuclear countries must gradually reduce their stockpiles.
